Chapter 11 - The Cargo Hold Ambush

The salty sea air hit Elena like a physical blow as she stepped through the bulkhead door into the cavernous, dimly lit cargo hold of the ship. Giant wooden crates marked with fraudulent export stamps towered overhead, casting long, menacing shadows across the steel deck plates.
From somewhere near the center of the hold, she heard the faint, high-pitched sound of a child crying out in distress.
"Mommy! Please!" Lily’s voice echoed off the steel containers, muffled but unmistakably clear.
Elena moved silently between the towering stacks of cargo crates, her bare feet making no sound against the damp deck. In her right hand, she clutched the heavy titanium pry bar like a dagger. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind was remarkably clear, honed to a razor-sharp focus driven by pure maternal wrath.
Ahead of her, around a bend formed by two stacked shipping containers, two armed guards stood smoking cigarettes near an open loading hatch that looked out over the dark, churning waters of the harbor.
"The boss said the girl goes on the midnight container to Zurich," one guard muttered, flicking his ash onto the steel floor. "What about the mother?"
"She's still trapped in the hotel vault, or dead by now," the second guard replied with a cruel laugh. "Either way, we collect our bonus by morning."
Elena didn't wait for them to finish their conversation. She sprang from the shadows with the explosive speed of a cornered predator. Before the first guard could turn around, Elena brought the heavy titanium bar down hard across the back of his knee, sending him crashing to the deck with a shriek of pain.
The second guard whirled around, reaching for his holster, but Elena didn't give him the chance. She slammed her shoulder directly into his chest, driving him backward into the open loading hatch.
For a terrifying second, the guard flailed wildly at the edge of the abyss, grabbing the sleeve of Elena’s torn evening dress before losing his footing and plunging silently into the dark water far below.
Elena stood panting at the edge of the hatch, adjusting the torn fabric over her shoulder. She looked down into the dark water, but there was no sign of him.

"Mommy!" Lily’s voice cried out again, much closer this time, coming from inside a sealed shipping container directly ahead.
