Chapter 2 - The Security Protocol

The digital interface embedded in the golden railing flickered from emerald green to a warning crimson. Elena’s breath hitched in her throat as she realized Julian was not reacting to a custody dispute, but to a system lockdown. Her hand tightened instinctively around Lily, who hiccuped against her collarbone.
"You didn't answer my calls, Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping from a panicked shout to a low, venomous whisper. He took a measured step forward, the white tuxedo jacket catching the harsh overhead light. "Neither did the legal team you hired behind my back this morning."
"Because you were selling out our foundation to people who trade in human misery, Julian!" Elena fired back, refusing to yield an inch of the marble floor. "I found the offshore accounts in your study. I have the wire transfers, the shipping manifests, everything. Lily and I are leaving this estate tonight, with or without your permission."
Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle that didn't reach his haunted eyes. "You think those files on your tablet are real? Elena, look around you. There are no security guards in this hallway because I dismissed them. Not to protect us, but to protect the shipment currently parked in the subterranean loading bay beneath our feet."
Lily whimpered, sensing the razor-thin tension humming between her parents. The toddler’s tiny fingers gripped Elena’s diamond earrings, pulling hard enough to draw a bead of blood. Elena didn't flinch. She kept her burning gaze locked onto her husband, whose demeanor had shifted from frantic father to cold corporate predator.
"You're lying," Elena said, though her voice lacked its earlier absolute conviction. "The board meeting was supposed to be about restructuring debt."
"Debt is just another word for leverage," Julian replied smoothly, stepping closer until the expensive scent of his cologne mingled with the metallic tang of fear in the air. "And right now, my biggest liability is the woman holding my heir."

Before Elena could process the sinister implication of his words, the heavy reinforced service door at the end of the hallway slowly clicked open, revealing a man holding a silenced firearm.
