Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest
The silencer on the intruder’s firearm gleamed dully in the corridor light. Elena reacted on pure maternal instinct, spinning on her heel and pressing Lily flat against the wall, using her own black-draped body as a human shield. The golden railing offered zero tactical cover, leaving them completely exposed as the stranger in a dark tactical vest advanced with chilling precision.
"Stay back!" Julian commanded, holding up both hands toward the armed man, his white tuxedo instantly shedding its illusion of innocence. "She doesn't have the master drive. It's still in the wall safe in the penthouse suite."
Elena’s head whipped around, her eyes wide with shock and betrayal as she stared at her husband. "You brought them here? You set us up?"
"I kept you safe until the deal closed!" Julian hissed back, his façade of control finally cracking under the weight of his own complicity. "If you had just stayed in Paris like I asked, none of this would have happened, Elena. You pushed your nose into a ledger that belonged to people who don't negotiate."
Lily began to scream again, the high-pitched terror piercing the tense silence of the hallway. The armed intruder lowered the muzzle of his weapon slightly, his expression entirely deadpan as he looked past Julian toward the mother and child.
"Time's up, Mr. Vance," the intruder spoke, his voice flat and devoid of human emotion. "The buyer wants the girl as collateral until the European assets are fully transferred. Hand her over, or we wipe the entire family tree clean right here on the marble."
Elena felt a cold sweat break out across her back. Her mind raced through a dozen escape routes, but every single exit route led past the armed man or through Julian. She clutched Lily tighter, feeling the frantic, galloping beat of her daughter’s tiny heart against her ribs.
