Chapter 5 - The Descent Into Darkness

The red emergency lights overhead flickered once, then died, plunging the grand hallway into an amber twilight backed by the glow of battery-powered strips. Julian grabbed Elena’s free wrist, his grip surprisingly gentle yet immovable.

"Because the men who sent him aren't just after my company, Elena," Julian whispered urgently, his eyes wide with a terror that looked entirely genuine. "They know about the Swiss bank accounts we set up in Lily’s name last year. They want our child to ensure we never testify."

Lily’s crying had subsided into exhausted, rhythmic hiccups as she clung desperately to her mother’s neck. Elena looked down at her daughter’s tear-stained face, then up at Julian’s bruised jaw. The math of their survival didn't leave room for pride or past grievances.

"Lead the way," Elena said coldly, shifting Lily's weight in her aching arms. "If you try to hand us over, Julian, I swear I will use every piece of evidence I have to bury you before they even pull the trigger."

Julian nodded once, his expression grim. He slid the brass key fob into the recessed panel beside the service elevator, bypassing the electronic lock. The heavy steel doors groaned open to reveal a cramped, utilitarian cage that smelled of industrial cleaning fluid and old grease.

As soon as they stepped inside, Julian slammed the manual closure gate shut and jammed another override key into the control console. The elevator dropped instantly, plunging them downward with a stomach-churning velocity that felt like falling off the edge of the earth.

"Where are we going?" Elena asked, planting her heels firmly against the rattling metal floor as the elevator shuddered violently.

"The old boiler rooms beneath the hotel," Julian replied, not looking at her as his fingers danced across a secondary keypad, typing a string of numbers from memory. "There’s an old drainage tunnel that leads straight out to the riverfront docks. A cargo freighter leaves for Canada in twenty minutes."

Elena narrowed her eyes through the dim gloom. "And who is waiting for us on those docks, Julian?"

The elevator abruptly ground to a halt with a metallic shriek, the digital floor indicator flashing a blinking zero. The doors slowly slid open, revealing not a dark tunnel, but a brightly lit underground laboratory filled with high-tech computer racks and armed guards pointing weapons directly at their faces.
