Chapter 8 - The Server Vault

The heavy steel door of the server cooling vault slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic hiss, plunging Elena into a freezing, subterranean darkness lit only by the rhythmic blinking of blue and green server LEDs. The air inside smelled of ozone and chilled Freon, biting bitterly at her bare shoulders and the torn fabric of her evening dress.

Elena curled into a tight ball on the grated metal floor, her breath forming small clouds in the sub-zero air. Her mind spun in chaotic circles, replaying every moment of the past twenty-four hours. The gala, the screaming toddler, Julian’s panicked sprint down the golden hallway—it had all been a meticulously orchestrated performance to herd her and Lily into Arthur Sterling’s trap.

Footsteps echoed softly on the outer grating. A small digital maintenance hatch on the vault door slid open, revealing the pale, bruised face of Julian peering through the slit.

"Elena," Julian whispered, his voice trembling violently against the hum of the cooling fans. "Are you alright?"

Elena scrambled across the freezing metal floor, grabbing the edges of the small hatch and glaring out at him with eyes full of murder. "If you ever speak to me again, Julian, I will make sure your last moments on this earth are spent knowing you destroyed everything you ever loved."

Julian flinched as if struck physically. He slid a small, heavy metal object through the narrow slot—a standard-issue technician’s pocket multitool with a serrated blade and a titanium pry bar.

"The cooling vault runs on an old mechanical override circuit on the exterior panel," Julian said hurriedly, glancing over his shoulder as if expecting guards to appear at any second. "If you use the pry bar on the interior vent grate behind the main server rack, you can drop into the drainage maintenance shaft."

Elena caught the tool, her cold fingers closing around its metallic handle. "Why are you helping me now? Did Arthur cut you out of the payout?"

"Arthur never intended to pay me," Julian confessed, a tear finally cutting a clean path through the grime on his cheek. "The board voted to freeze all my personal assets an hour ago. I’m ruined, Elena. Completely ruined. But if you get to the docks, you can intercept the launch before the freighter clears the harbor."

"And Lily?" Elena demanded, pressing her face close to the opening.

"She's on the primary launch vessel," Julian whispered, his voice breaking entirely. "Pier 42. Go, Elena. Please."
