Chapter 4 - The Hidden Leverage

The LED indicator on the small flash drive hidden inside Elena’s dress pulsed with a faint, steady amber light against her thigh. She needed a distraction, a window of two seconds to reach the fire escape alcove twenty feet behind the intruder.

Julian saw the subtle shift in her posture. Years of living in high-society circles had taught him to read Elena’s micro-expressions better than anyone alive. Instead of warning the gunman, Julian lunged forward with surprising speed, tackling the tactical operative squarely in the chest.

"Run, Elena!" Julian roared, the breath driven from his lungs as both men crashed hard against the white plaster wall.

Elena didn't hesitate. She clutched Lily tightly to her chest, her strapless heels clicking frantically against the marble as she sprinted toward the alcove. The heavy glass fire door was within arm's reach, its red exit sign casting an eerie glow over her dark, flowing hair.

Behind her, a muffled scuffle and the sickening crunch of bone echoed down the grand hallway. Lily buried her face in Elena’s shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably, "Mommy, stop! I want to go home!"

"We are going home, baby," Elena panted, her lungs burning as she slammed her shoulder against the push-bar of the fire exit.

The door refused to budge. It was magnetically sealed from the outside. Panic threatened to paralyze her as she rattled the heavy metal handle with her free hand, leaving smears of blood from her torn earlobe across the polished steel.

A heavy hand suddenly clamped down on her bare shoulder, spinning her around with brutal force. It wasn't the intruder. It was Julian, his white tuxedo jacket torn at the shoulder and smeared with plaster dust, his face pale and slick with sweat.

"The fire exits are locked down by the main security mainframe," Julian gasped, clutching a bloody heavy brass key fob in his trembling palm. "You can't get out that way, Elena. But I can get us into the service elevator."

Elena stared at the key fob, her trust entirely shattered. "Why should I believe a single word you say?"
