Chapter 13 - The Final Bluff

Arthur narrowed his eyes, suspicious of her sudden compliance. He kept the silenced pistol leveled at her center mass while taking a cautious step closer. "Don't try any heroics, Elena. The safety is off."
"I don't have any heroics left," Elena said, her voice dropping to a mournful whisper as she stepped slightly to the left, casually positioning herself between Arthur and the open loading hatch behind him. "Just let her out. Please."
Arthur reached into his coat pocket with his left hand, pulling out a heavy brass key ring and dangling it in front of her face. "You were always a fool for sentimentality, Elena. That was your fatal flaw."
In a blur of motion, Elena didn't lunge for the key. Instead, she dropped flat to the deck plates, sweeping her leg hard in a low, vicious arc.
Arthur’s boots were knocked out from under him before he could pull the trigger. The pistol flew from his hand, clattering across the steel deck and disappearing over the edge of the open loading hatch into the dark water below.
With a roar of fury, Arthur hit the deck hard, but he scrambled up with surprising agility, lunging for Elena's throat.
Elena sidestepped his clumsy charge, using his own momentum to redirect him toward the open hatch. Arthur caught his foot on the raised metal lip of the loading bay, windmilled his arms frantically, and tumbled backward into the dark void with a muffled scream that ended abruptly as he hit the water.
Elena didn't waste a second looking down. She grabbed the heavy brass key ring from where it had fallen on the deck, ran to the shipping container, and thrust the key into the padlock.
With a satisfying click, the lock sprang open.
Elena yanked the heavy steel door wide. Inside the dark, cramped container, three-year-old Lily sat huddled in the corner, her light blue dress stained with dust and tears, clutching her pigtails with trembling hands.
"Mommy!" Lily wailed, launching herself forward into Elena’s open arms.
Elena scooped her daughter up, pressing the child’s face tightly against her shoulder and rocking back and forth as tears finally streamed freely down her own cheeks.

"I've got you, my sweet baby," Elena whispered, her voice breaking with overwhelming relief. "We're safe now. I promise you, we're safe."
