Chapter 8 - The Countdown

The digital timer blinked malevolently in the dim light of the observation deck: 00:03:30 and dropping. Adrian stared at the glowing red numbers, his mind racing through every possible escape route. The reinforced door was locked tight with an industrial steel deadbolt, and the observation window was a laminated security barrier designed to withstand heavy impacts.
"Damn it!" Adrian cursed aloud, gripping the iron pipe so tightly his torn knuckles began to bleed afresh, soaking the rusted metal in dark crimson.
He didn't have time to dismantle the door lock with crude tools. The countdown was accelerating, accompanied by a high-pitched electronic whine that signaled the activation of a chemical dispersion valve somewhere within the ventilation shaft above his head. A faint, sweet-smelling vapor began to billow from the ceiling vents, curling downward in thick, ghostly plumes toward the floor.
Adrian dropped the pipe, ripping the collar of his black fitted shirt upward to cover his nose and mouth. The sweet chemical odor instantly caught in the back of his throat, burning like liquid fire and making his vision blur at the edges. This wasn't just a demolition charge; it was a localized knockout gas designed to put him down permanently before he could interfere with whatever Clara and Marcus were orchestrating.
Stumbling backward, Adrian coughed violently, his massive frame fighting against the rapidly spreading narcotic vapor. He needed leverage, something heavy enough to punch through the structural frame of the observation window. His eyes scanned the dusty room through a haze of gathering gray fog until they landed on a heavy steel filing cabinet tucked into a dark corner near the back wall.
Ignoring the burning sensation in his lungs, Adrian rushed the cabinet, slamming his shoulder into its side. With a screech of tortured metal, the heavy piece of furniture tipped forward and crashed onto the concrete floor, spilling old, water-damaged municipal documents across the dust.
Adrian grabbed the cabinet by its reinforced bottom edge, hoisting its considerable weight into his arms like a massive shield. His muscles strained to their absolute breaking point, veins bulging fiercely along his thick neck and forearms as he staggered backward toward the cracked security glass.
The timer flashed 00:01:15.
With a guttural roar that echoed off the high concrete ceiling, Adrian hurled the entire steel filing cabinet like a battering ram directly into the spiderwebbed center of the observation window.

The glass exploded outward in a deafening crash, sending a cascade of sharp shards raining down into the open-air courtyard three stories below, while Adrian tumbled through the jagged frame into the fresh, freezing air just as the timer hit zero.
