Chapter 14 - The Blackout

The fluorescent overhead lights buzzed once, flickered erratically, and then died completely, plunging the windowless interrogation room into a heavy, suffocating darkness. The only illumination came from the faint red emergency exit sign glowing above the heavy steel door. Outside in the precinct hallway, emergency klaxons began to wail in a deafening, rhythmic cycle, accompanied by the frantic shouts of federal agents and rushing footsteps echoing against the concrete floors.
The prosecutor stood up abruptly from his chair, his hands knocking against the table edge. "What the hell is going on?" he demanded, fumbling in his suit pocket for a flashlight or his phone.
Adrian didn't move an inch. He sat calmly in the darkness, the heavy handcuffs resting motionless against the metal table, a faint, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I told you, prosecutor. Clara didn't steal my past assets. She stole a dead-man's switch."
"Cut the dramatics," the prosecutor snapped, his voice tight with rising panic as he tried the heavy steel door handle. It didn't budge—the automated lockdown protocol had instantly engaged every electromagnetic deadbolt in the facility. "Open this door! Security, report!"
A sharp, synthetic chime echoed from the two-way mirror on the wall, followed immediately by the automated sound of a secure digital audio file playing back through the room's hidden intercom speakers.
“Transfer complete,” a distorted digital voice announced—not Marcus Vance’s voice, but an automated security script. “Primary encryption key verified. All corporate assets, offshore accounts, and syndicate communication nodes are now redirecting to local authorities.”
The prosecutor spun around in the darkness, staring wide-eyed at the glass mirror. "What did you do? What did you put on that server?"
"Everything," Adrian said softly, his voice cutting through the wailing alarm klaxons like a razor blade. "Every illegal offshore wire transfer, every shell corporation, every bribe paid to federal judges and corporate executives over the last ten years. Clara thought she was stealing my old digital footprint. In reality, I spent the last six months turning that server into a tracking beacon linked directly to the syndicate's primary master ledger."
Suddenly, the red emergency exit sign flickered and went dark, leaving the room in absolute, pitch-black obscurity. From somewhere down the hallway, the sound of heavy boots approached at a dead sprint, followed by the metallic click of a keycard reader attempting to override the lockdown system.
"You're insane," the prosecutor breathed, pressing his back against the locked door. "You just handed the entire criminal underworld a target with your own name on it."
May you like
"No," Adrian whispered into the dark as the steel door began to slowly groan and click open under an emergency power override. "I just delivered them to my front door."
