Chapter 10 - The Tarmac Confrontation

The deafening whine of twin jet turbines cut through the cold night air as the private aircraft’s engines spooled up for immediate takeoff. Floodlights from the runway tower cut across the tarmac, casting long, sharp shadows that danced over the chain-link fence where Adrian stood gripping the rusted wire mesh. His torn hands bled onto the galvanized steel, but he felt nothing save for the thunderous beating of his own heart.
Out on the open concrete, standing less than fifty yards away at the foot of the airstair, was Clara. The white jacket she had worn earlier was gone, replaced by a dark, weather-resistant trench coat that whipped wildly in the jetwash. In her arms, clutched tightly against her chest, was a small bundle wrapped in a familiar pink blanket. A tiny arm protruded from the folds, wearing a sleeve that matched the pink dress left abandoned in the SUV.
"Clara!" Adrian bellowed, his voice carrying effortlessly over the screaming roar of the turbine engines.
He slammed his boot against the chain-link fence, using the thick wire as a ladder, and hauled his massive frame upward in a rapid, practiced climb. He vaulted over the razor-wire top in a blur of motion, hitting the tarmac on the other side with a heavy thud that jarred his bruised joints.
Clara slowly turned around at the sound of his voice. She didn't look panicked, nor did she look surprised. A cold, detached smile touched the corners of her pale lips as she adjusted the bundle in her arms, stepping closer to the open cabin door where Marcus Vance stood waiting with his hand extended to help her inside.
"You're too late, Adrian," Clara shouted over the deafening whine of the engines, her voice remarkably steady as the jetwash whipped her blonde hair across her face. "The transfer papers were filed electronically ten minutes ago. You have no legal standing, no custody rights, and no future with this child."
Adrian sprinted across the open concrete, his heavy boots slapping rhythmically against the runway, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. Marcus Vance stepped out from the doorway of the aircraft, reaching inside his trench coat and pulling out a heavy, matte-black sidearm, leveling the barrel squarely at Adrian’s chest.
"Stop right there, Adrian," Marcus warned, his voice dangerously calm above the roar of the jet. "One more step and this ends right here on the tarmac."
Adrian didn't slow down. He locked his dark, bloodshot eyes onto the barrel of the gun, his massive muscles tensing for a final, lethal collision. But before he could close the final ten yards, Clara stepped out from behind Marcus, lowered the pink blanket from the bundle in her arms just enough for the floodlights to catch it, and revealed something that stopped Adrian dead in his tracks.
It wasn't Maya.
Resting in Clara's arms was not a little girl at all, but a heavy, military-grade encrypted server box wrapped in pink cloth, blinking rapidly with a series of green data-transfer lights.

At that exact moment, the cabin door of the private jet slammed shut behind them with a heavy, hydraulic thud, and the aircraft began to taxi forward down the runway.
