Chapter 3 - The Cargo Hold Secret

The heavy rear door of the SUV swung outward with an agonizingly slow creak, releasing a puff of stale, chemical-scented air into the driveway. Adrian stared at the dark interior of the cargo hold, his chest burning with a suffocating mixture of rage and disbelief. Clara remained frozen by the fender, her white jacket fluttering slightly in the cold afternoon wind, her eyes locked on the opening mechanism.

"You planned this," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl. He stepped forward, ignoring the throbbing pain in his shattered knuckles. "You rigged the doors. You set up that entire fake panic just to lure me out here."

"I didn't rig anything," Clara replied, her tone alarmingly devoid of emotion. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest. "If you actually looked past your own explosive temper for once in your life, you would realize that things stopped revolving around you a long time ago. Look inside the compartment, Adrian. See for yourself."

Adrian gripped the edge of the cargo frame and pulled hard. The hidden floor panel of the SUV unlatched, revealing a shallow compartment beneath the main deck. Inside lay a heavy-duty tactical backpack, a burner phone flashing with a blinking red light, and a stack of crisp legal documents bound with a red rubber band. On top of the stack rested Maya’s favorite toy stethoscope, the bright pink plastic stained with a smudge of fresh black grease.

Adrian reached down, his fingers brushing the cold plastic of the stethoscope before grabbing the legal papers. He ripped the rubber band away and scanned the top page under the harsh sunlight. The heading glared back at him in bold Courier font: EMERGENCY CUSTODY RELINQUISHMENT AND ASSET TRANSFER. Below his signature—or what looked horrifyingly like his signature—was a notary stamp dated three days ago, authorizing the immediate surrender of parental rights to an anonymous holding corporation based overseas.

"This is a forgery," Adrian spat, his voice trembling as he crumpled the paper in his fist. "I never signed this. I would never give away my daughter!"

"Would you?" A deep, unfamiliar voice cut sharply through the quiet suburban street.

Adrian whipped around, his muscles tensing for physical violence. Standing at the edge of the driveway, leaning casually against the driver's side door of a sleek black sedan that had silently pulled up behind them, was a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit. The stranger wore dark sunglasses despite the overcast sky, and a chilling, polite smile played across his clean-shaven lips.

"Who the hell are you?" Adrian demanded, taking a predatory step toward the newcomer.

"My name is Marcus Vance," the stranger said smoothly, straightening his jacket cuffs. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, tossing it effortlessly through the air toward Adrian’s bleeding hand. "And I'm the man who legally owns every breath your daughter takes right now."
