Chapter 12 - The Closing Net

The wail of approaching police sirens echoed sharply across the flat concrete of the airfield, bouncing off the distant hangars and growing louder by the second. Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the chain-link perimeter fence, painting the dark night in a strobe-like rhythm. Adrian stood motionless on the tarmac, the smartphone still pressed to his ear, listening to the dial tone hum softly after Clara had abruptly disconnected the call.

In the distance, the private jet lifted its nose into the air, its powerful engines roaring as it broke through the low-hanging cloud cover and vanished into the starless night sky. They were gone, carrying the digital server, his entire financial empire, and every piece of leverage he possessed. All that remained for Adrian was an empty runway, a ruined pair of hands, and a wall of flashing police cruisers pulling up to the perimeter gate.

"Drop your weapons! Put your hands behind your head where we can see them!" a harsh amplified voice boomed from the lead police cruiser, cutting through the fading whine of the jet turbines.

Adrian didn't run. He slowly lowered his smartphone, sliding it into his pocket, and raised his blood-stained hands, watching as several local patrol officers piled out of their vehicles with their service weapons drawn and aimed squarely at his chest. They had been tipped off precisely on schedule—not by an anonymous citizen, but by Marcus Vance, ensuring that Adrian would be safely detained behind bars while Clara and her associates made a clean, unchallenged escape across international borders.

"Step away from the fence and get on your knees!" the lead officer shouted, his voice tense and authoritative as he advanced with two other officers, their tactical flashlights blindingly bright in Adrian's eyes.

Adrian took a slow breath, feeling the cool autumn air fill his lungs. He knew that resisting arrest right now would accomplish nothing except guaranteeing a bullet or a prolonged federal cell sentence, neither of which would help him protect Maya. He dropped heavily to his knees on the cold concrete, the rough surface biting into his joints, and intertwined his torn, bleeding fingers behind his neck.

The officers rushed forward, slamming him face-first onto the tarmac with practiced efficiency. Cold steel cuffs ratcheted tightly around his wrists, pinching the raw, open wounds on his knuckles and sending a fresh wave of sharp pain shooting up his forearms. They hauled him roughly to his feet, shoving him toward the back door of a waiting cruiser.

As the heavy metal door slammed shut behind him, cutting off the chill of the airfield wind, Adrian looked out through the reinforced window of the patrol car. Parked just beyond the police barricade, sitting quietly in the shadows of an unmarked van with its engine idling, was a vehicle he recognized instantly.

The rear window rolled down an inch, revealing the pale, calm face of Clara staring directly at him through the glass. She didn't look away, nor did she smile. She simply raised a small, familiar pink toy stethoscope to her lips, blew a silent kiss toward the police cruiser, and rolled the window back up as the van melted away into the darkness.
