Chapter 1 - The Broken Glass

The gravel driveway crunched beneath Adrian’s heavy boots as the bitter wind whipped across the manicured lawn. He stared down at his bleeding hand, the raw skin torn open and dripping dark crimson onto the gray stones. Shards of safety glass still clung to the jagged black window frame of the SUV, glittering cruelly in the harsh afternoon sunlight. The chilling silence of the suburbs felt suffocating, broken only by the ragged breathing of the blond woman standing a few feet away.
Clara clutched the white jacket tightly around her trembling shoulders, her face drained of all color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out for several terrifying seconds. She looked from the shattered door frame down to Adrian’s mangled knuckles, her wide blue eyes swimming with suppressed panic.
"You didn't have to break it like that, Adrian," Clara finally whispered, her voice cracking with an unnatural tension that felt entirely wrong for the situation. "There were other ways. We had options."
Adrian whipped his head around, his scruffy jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He stepped closer to her, invading her space with the raw, intimidating presence of his large frame.
"Options?" Adrian growled, his voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating register. "Look at the back seat, Clara! Look at what you let happen while you were inside playing games!"
"I wasn't playing anything!" Clara snapped back, taking a defiant half-step forward despite the visible terror in her posture. "You know how complicated things are right now. You wanted this separation just as much as I did. Don't you dare put this entirely on me!"
"My daughter was suffocating in that heat while you stood there arguing about car keys!" Adrian shouted, his massive chest heaving beneath his black fitted shirt. "Where is she, Clara? Where did you move her?"
Clara blinked rapidly, a tear finally escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. She pointed a shaking finger past the ruined window into the dark interior of the vehicle, where a small pink dress lay crumpled on the leather seat next to an empty infant carrier.

"She’s not in the car anymore, Adrian," Clara whispered, a terrifying smirk twisting her pale lips. "Somebody took her five minutes before you even pulled into the driveway."
