Chapter 2 - The Empty Seat

The words hung in the frigid air, sharp and unbelievable. Adrian froze, his breathing catching in his throat as his gaze darted back into the dark interior of the SUV. The pink dress sat there like a mocking flag, but the small body that had been crying inside just moments ago had vanished without a trace. The tinted windows blocked any view of the surrounding neighborhood, casting deep, claustrophobic shadows across the leather upholstery.

"Stop lying to me," Adrian breathed, his voice dangerously low as he grabbed Clara by the shoulders of her white jacket. He shook her gently, his massive hands trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer terror. "There is no one else here. The doors were locked from the inside. How could anyone take her?"

Clara didn't flinch. She stared straight into his dark, bloodshot eyes with an eerie, detached calm that sent a cold shudder down Adrian's spine.

"Think about it, Adrian," Clara said, her voice eerily steady. "You’ve been so consumed by your anger, so blind to the paperwork, that you never actually read the adoption transfer documents you signed last Tuesday."

Adrian let go of her as if she had suddenly caught fire. He stumbled backward against the side of the car, his injured hand throbbing furiously.

"What are you talking about?" Adrian demanded, wiping a smear of blood across his black shirt without realizing it. "Maya is my flesh and blood. I raised her from the moment she was born."

"Did you?" Clara tilted her head, a bitter smile touching the corners of her mouth. "Check your encrypted mail folder, Adrian. The DNA results from the private clinic arrived while you were at the gym this morning. You aren't her biological father at all."

Before Adrian could process the devastating weight of her words, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the back of the SUV. The rear cargo door slowly popped open on its own.
