Chapter 7 - The Empty Cage

The heavy wooden door smashed against the interior concrete wall with a thunderous echo that rattled the dust from the high rafters. Adrian surged into the room, his fists raised, scanning every dark corner of the abandoned observation deck for Marcus Vance or his armed guards.

The room was vast, dominated by a massive, curved glass window overlooking the rusted expanse of the water treatment basins below. In the center of the dusty floor sat a single metal folding chair, and tied securely to its back with heavy-duty zip ties was Maya’s bright pink dress—the exact one she had been wearing earlier in the day. Beside the chair rested an old, static-filled baby monitor, broadcasting the sound of synthetic, recorded sobs echoing in an infinite loop through a hidden speaker.

Adrian froze, his fists slowly dropping to his sides as the sickening realization washed over him. It was a trap. Another meticulously orchestrated diversion to pull him away from the real target.

"No," Adrian muttered, his breath hitching in his throat. He rushed forward, ripping the zip ties apart with his bare hands and snatching the pink dress off the chair. The fabric was freezing cold, smelling faintly of fabric softener, but it was completely dry. There had never been a child in this room.

Before he could process the full scale of the deception, a loud, metallic clang echoed from the hallway behind him. The heavy wooden door he had just kicked in suddenly swung shut on its own, followed by the heavy thud of an industrial deadbolt sliding into place from the outside.

"Hey!" Adrian roared, spinning around and charging the door. He slammed his shoulder against the wood, but it had been reinforced with steel plating on the exterior side. It didn't even splinter. "Open this door, Marcus! I know you're out there!"

A sharp, static-laced hiss erupted from the baby monitor sitting on the floor behind him. Adrian whirled around, stepping back into the center of the room as a low, distorted laugh crackled through the small plastic speaker.

"You really are predictable, Adrian," Marcus’s voice hissed through the speaker, echoing eerily off the concrete walls. "Did you honestly think we would leave the most valuable asset in an unsecured industrial ruin? Maya was never at this facility. While you’ve been running wild across the city playing hero, Clara has already boarded a private flight out of municipal sector four."

Adrian grabbed the baby monitor and hurled it with all his might against the reinforced glass window. The plastic casing shattered into a thousand jagged pieces, silencing the laughter instantly.

Desperate, Adrian looked around the room for another exit. The massive observation window was reinforced security glass, but under the strain of his raw, unbridled fury, he grabbed an iron pipe left leaning against the wall and drove it with all his might into the center of the pane.

The glass didn't shatter—it simply cracked in a spiderweb pattern, revealing a small, blinking red LED light embedded directly into the metal window frame. Attached to the light was a tiny digital screen displaying a countdown timer: 00:03:45 and ticking downward fast.
