Chapter 7 - The Arrest and the Interrogation

The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists first, followed swiftly by a second pair that secured Valeria’s hands behind her back. The metallic snap echoed off the pristine glass walls of the boardroom, shattering the illusion of corporate invincibility Julian had spent years constructing. Valeria’s beige handbag slipped from her fingers, hitting the polished marble floor with a dull thud, its contents spilling slightly—a gold compact, a tube of lipstick, and a platinum credit card that was already locked.
“You can’t do this!” Julian shouted, struggling against the federal agent who gripped his elbow. “This is a civil dispute! We signed the transfer documents! We gave you the patent!”
“The patent transfer satisfies the civil restitution to Mendoza Holdings,” Arthur Mendoza said calmly, not even bothering to stand as he watched them being hauled away. He adjusted his luxury wristwatch with absolute indifference. “The federal wire fraud charges regarding the initial embezzlement of public pension funds, however, are a matter for the Department of Justice. My family simply provided the initial forensic audit.”
Eleanor stepped forward, picking up Valeria’s dropped handbag and placing it neatly on the edge of the glass table. She offered Valeria a cool, polite smile.
“I told you to be careful, Valeria,” Eleanor reminded her softly. “Innocence is a difficult performance to maintain when you’re standing in the wreckage of someone else’s empire.”
As the agents guided them toward the private elevators, Arturiu remained seated next to her father. She watched Julian cast one last desperate, pleading glance in her direction. She didn't blink, offering no pity, only the cold validation of a score finally settled.
Within twenty minutes, they were loaded into the back of an unmarked federal transport van. The ride to the downtown holding facility was silent and suffocating. The hum of the vehicle’s engine vibrated through the metal floorboards, matching the frantic rhythm of Valeria’s racing thoughts.
They were separated immediately upon arrival. Julian was led down a sterile, fluorescent-lit corridor toward the high-security holding cells, while Valeria was escorted into a small, windowless interrogation room.
The room contained only a bolted metal table, two chairs, and a two-way mirror mounted on the concrete wall. Valeria sat down, her hands still cuffed in front of her after a brief processing concession. The burgundy midi dress she wore now felt like a cruel costume from a life she no longer inhabited.
Ten minutes later, the heavy steel door swung open. It wasn't a federal prosecutor or a local detective who walked in.
It was Eleanor.
She carried a single manila folder, which she placed squarely in the center of the metal table. She sat down opposite Valeria, smoothing the fabric of her green dress before folding her hands neatly together.
“Why are you here?” Valeria demanded, her voice shaking with adrenaline and exhaustion. “Where is my attorney?”
“Your attorney dropped your case five minutes ago after discovering your corporate indemnification clause left you completely exposed,” Eleanor replied smoothly, her gold hoop earrings catching the harsh overhead light. “Which brings me to why I’m sitting across from you instead of a federal prosecutor.”
Valeria leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. “Cut to the chase, Eleanor. What do you want from me?”
Eleanor slid the manila folder across the table, opening it to reveal a single sheet of paper with a bold red heading.
“Arthur doesn't care about prosecuting you, Valeria. You were merely Julian’s accessory of convenience,” Eleanor said quietly. “Sign this cooperation agreement, testify against Julian regarding the offshore accounts you helped him establish in the Caymans, and the federal charges against you will be dropped by sundown. Refuse, and you spend the next ten years sharing a cell with violent offenders.”

Valeria stared at the document, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the horrifying choice before her.
