Chapter 6 - The Arturiu Revelation

The heavy silence in the boardroom pressed down on Julian like a physical weight. He stared up at Arturiu, his blonde hair slightly disheveled, his light beard twitching as he struggled to process her sudden, commanding presence. Valeria turned her head sharply from Arturiu to Julian, the pieces of a much larger, more intricate puzzle finally clicking into place in her mind.

“You knew,” Valeria whispered, her voice laced with sudden betrayal as she looked at Julian. “This wasn't just a bitter divorce. You both planned this.”

“No, Valeria,” Arturiu corrected her calmly, pulling out the chair directly next to her father and sitting down with absolute grace. “Julian didn’t plan this part. He was too arrogant to realize that the divorce settlement he thought he won was actually a Trojan horse.”

Arthur Mendoza leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers over his red pocket square. He watched Julian squirm with cold satisfaction.

“When Julian first approached my daughter three years ago,” Arthur explained, his voice echoing in the vast glass-walled room, “we knew exactly who he was and what his father had tried to do to our logistics firm a decade prior. We let him think he was manipulating Arturiu into marriage. We let him believe he was siphoning capital into his shell company. Every dollar he thought he stole was a calculated investment from our trust, tracked down to the microsecond.”

Julian stood up abruptly, knocking his chair backward against the marble floor. “That’s a lie! The federal documents—the asset freeze—that was your doing to ruin me!”

“It was legal exposure, Julian,” Eleanor interjected smoothly from her position behind Arthur. She crossed her arms, her green dress rustling slightly. “You signed contracts containing hidden clawback clauses drafted by my own firm. You signed them willingly because you were blinded by greed and your obsession with breaking our family name.”

Valeria stood up as well, her burgundy dress swaying as she stepped away from Julian, distancing herself from the sinking ship. She looked at Arthur and Arturiu with calculated detachment.

“If Julian is completely ruined and his assets have been seized under federal jurisdiction,” Valeria said carefully, “then his obligations to me—and any joint liabilities incurred during our marriage—are null and void under the marital debt protection act.”

Arturiu turned her head, looking at Valeria with a mixture of amusement and mild respect.

“Smart girl, Valeria,” Arturiu noted. “You dropped him the second the collateral vanished. Unfortunately, you signed as a guarantor on Julian’s corporate lease agreement for the downtown loft six months ago. That makes you jointly liable for the remaining four million dollars in commercial damages.”

Valeria’s face went completely pale. The diamond watch on her wrist suddenly felt heavy, like an anchor dragging her down into the abyss.

“That’s impossible,” Valeria breathed, her composure finally cracking. “Julian told me my signature was just a formality for interior design approvals.”

Julian didn't look at her. He stared at the floor, defeated, his silence confirming every word Arturiu had spoken.

Before Valeria could scream or demand answers, the boardroom doors flew open once more. Two federal agents stepped inside, flanked by a court bailiff holding a fresh set of legal documents.

“Julian Vance and Valeria Thorne,” the lead agent announced, holding up an arrest warrant. “You are both being placed under federal custody for conspiracy to commit corporate wire fraud.”
