Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

The digital clock on the bedside table glowed a harsh 2:14 AM. The loft was pitch black, save for the pale wash of moonlight cutting across the hardwood floor. Valeria lay awake, staring at the ceiling, the soft, rhythmic breathing of Julian beside her serving as a maddening reminder of their impending ruin. Her diamond watch ticked softly on the nightstand, every second feeling like a countdown to total humiliation.

A faint sound downstairs broke the silence. It wasn’t the wind rattling the balcony glass, nor was it the distant hum of city traffic. It was the distinct, muted click of the front door latch engaging, followed by the soft padding of footsteps on the entryway floor.

Valeria’s heart hammered against her ribs. She nudged Julian hard in the ribs, whispering his name urgently. Julian bolted upright, rubbing his eyes, blinking through the darkness.

“Did you hear that?” Valeria whispered, pulling the duvet tightly around her shoulders in her burgundy dress, which she hadn't bothered to take off.

Julian slipped out of bed, pulling on a dark robe over his trousers. He crept silently toward the bedroom door, peering out into the dimly lit hallway. The loft was completely still, but a thin line of warm light beamed from underneath the study door at the far end of the corridor.

With agonizing slowness, Julian pushed the study door open.

Sitting in the leather executive chair behind the mahogany desk was Eleanor. She looked entirely at home, her beige blazer draped over the back of the chair, her green dress catching the amber desk-lamp light. She was casually flipping through the physical folders containing Julian’s most secure financial records—documents that the federal marshals hadn't even managed to catalog yet.

“You’re trespassing,” Julian said, stepping into the room, his voice sharp despite his visible exhaustion. “I can call the police right now and have you thrown out.”

Eleanor didn’t look up from the folder immediately. She turned a page, her gold hoop earrings catching the light as she finally raised her chin to meet his gaze. Her expression was completely devoid of fear or urgency.

“Go ahead, Julian,” Eleanor replied, her voice smooth and unhurried. “Call them. Tell the authorities that the woman you tried to frame for corporate embezzlement is sitting in your study reviewing your tax evasion history. Let’s see who they arrest first.”

Valeria appeared behind Julian in the doorway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She glared at the older woman, refusing to be intimidated.

“What do you want, Eleanor?” Valeria demanded. “If you’re here to gloat, you’ve made your point. We’re ruined. Are you satisfied?”

Eleanor closed the folder with a soft thud. She stood up, smoothing her green dress, and walked slowly toward them until she was standing just a few feet away.

“I’m not here to gloat, Valeria,” Eleanor said, her tone softening just enough to be unsettling. “I’m here to offer you a way out. Arthur wants everything back, down to the last penny. But I convinced him to give you one chance to keep your dignity—and your freedom.”

Julian stepped between Valeria and Eleanor, his jaw clenched. “What kind of chance?”

May you like

Eleanor offered a faint, enigmatic smile. “Tomorrow morning, at nine sharp, you will walk into Arthur’s corporate office and sign over full ownership of your startup patent. In exchange, the federal charges against Julian will be quietly dropped.”
