Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

The morning sun beat down mercilessly on the mirrored glass facade of the Mendoza Tower downtown. Julian and Valeria stood in the cavernous marble lobby, surrounded by the quiet hum of corporate efficiency. Valeria wore her signature burgundy dress, her posture rigidly upright, while Julian clutched a leather portfolio containing the signed patent transfer documents. They had discussed every possible angle until dawn, realizing with grim certainty that they had no legal defense against Arthur Mendoza’s corporate empire.

An elevator chime signaled their arrival, and the polished brass doors slid open smoothly. Waiting inside was Eleanor, impeccably dressed in her green dress and beige blazer. She pressed the button for the penthouse floor without looking at them, her gold hoop earrings catching the fluorescent overhead lights.

“Don't look so miserable,” Eleanor said casually as the elevator surged upward with silent, high-speed precision. “You’re walking away with your freedom. In business, that’s considered a massive victory.”

“You didn’t leave us any choice, Eleanor,” Julian said through gritted teeth, his eyes fixed on the digital floor numbers climbing rapidly past forty. “Arthur engineered this entire trap from the day Arturiu and I filed for divorce.”

“Arthur merely protected what belongs to his family,” Eleanor replied, her tone unwavering. “Your mistake, Julian, was thinking you could outsmart a man who built this city brick by brick using people exactly like you as stepping stones.”

The elevator came to a frictionless stop on the sixty-fifth floor. The doors parted to reveal a sprawling, sunlit boardroom overlooking the entire metropolitan area. At the far end of a massive glass table sat Arthur Mendoza, the distinguished older man from the restaurant. He wore a dark suit with a crisp blue dress shirt and his signature red pocket square. He was checking his luxury wristwatch as they approached.

“Sit down,” Arthur commanded, his deep voice carrying effortless authority.

Julian and Valeria took their seats across from him. Eleanor stood quietly behind Arthur’s chair, acting as both counsel and shadow.

Julian placed the leather portfolio on the glass table and pushed it forward. “The patent transfer is complete. Every single line of code, every proprietary algorithm, and all international rights have been reassigned back to Mendoza Holdings.”

Arthur opened the portfolio with slow, deliberate movements. He scanned the signature page, his eyes narrowing as he verified the seals. Satisfied, he closed the folder and looked up at Julian.

“You always were ambitious, Julian,” Arthur said coldly. “Too bad you lacked the discipline to build something of your own instead of stealing it from my daughter.”

“Arturiu knew what she was signing when we divorced,” Julian retorted, his voice rising dangerously.

“Did she?” A cool, composed voice interrupted from the doorway behind them.

Julian and Valeria whipped their heads around. The heavy oak doors of the boardroom slowly swung open, and Arturiu Mendoza stepped into the room. She wore a stunning white pantsuit, her long dark hair falling neatly over her shoulders. She looked healthier, sharper, and infinitely more dangerous than she had during the restaurant confrontation.

“Hello, Julian,” Arturiu said, stepping up to the table and resting her hands on the glass surface. “Did you really think my father and Eleanor were the only ones orchestrating your downfall?”
