Chapter 2 - The Unraveling Secret

Julian grabbed Valeria’s elbow, guiding her hastily toward the exit of the upscale restaurant while the older man watched them retreat with unreadable, cold eyes. The valet brought their European sedan within minutes, but the ride home was suffocatingly quiet. Valeria sat in the passenger seat, tapping her diamond watch against the leather armrest, her mind racing. The mention of Arturiu Mendoza had completely shifted the power dynamic of their relationship. Julian had spent the last two years convincing her that his previous marriage to Arturiu was a dead issue, a mere footnote wrapped up in a clean, quiet financial settlement.

When they stepped into their minimalist downtown loft, Valeria slammed her beige handbag onto the entryway console.

“Talk to me right now, Julian,” Valeria demanded, crossing her arms in her burgundy dress. “Who is Arturiu Mendoza, and why did that man at the restaurant look at you like you owe him a fortune?”

Julian loosened his tan dress shirt collar, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering city skyline. He ran a hand through his blonde hair, his light beard catching the neon reflections of the streetlights below.

“Arturiu isn’t just some random name from my past, Valeria,” Julian admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “He’s Arthur Mendoza. Senior. He owns half the commercial real estate downtown, including the holding company that funded our startup capital.”

Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. The apartment they stood in, the car parked downstairs, the very foundation of Julian’s financial success—it all suddenly pointed back to a man they had just encountered by sheer, terrifying coincidence.

“You told me your startup money came from an angel investor in Chicago,” Valeria said, her voice trembling slightly. “You lied to me.”

“I had to,” Julian turned to face her, his expression desperate. “If I told you the truth about where my initial capital came from, you never would have signed the pre-nup, and you never would have looked twice at me. Arthur Mendoza destroyed my father’s business when I was a kid. Taking his daughter’s hand in marriage was supposed to be my revenge. Getting divorced from Arturiu with a massive settlement was supposed to be the payout.”

“And what about Eleanor?” Valeria asked, stepping closer. “Who is she in this twisted corporate soap opera?”

Julian stopped pacing. He stared at Valeria, a look of absolute dread washing over his features.

“Eleanor isn’t just a companion to Arthur,” Julian said, the words tasting like ash. “She is his chief legal counsel, and worse, she’s the executor of the Mendoza family trust that holds the title deed to this exact building.”

Before Valeria could process the full weight of the catastrophe, a sharp knock echoed through the loft. It was a heavy, deliberate sound that signaled authority. Julian walked slowly to the smart-door monitor, pressing the display button. On the screen stood two uniformed police officers and a courier holding a thick manila envelope stamped with a corporate seal.

Julian slowly unlocked the door, his hand shaking as he pulled it open.
