Chapter 3 - The Federal Injunction

The heavy manila envelope felt like a block of lead in Julian’s trembling hands. The uniformed officer standing in the doorway of their minimalist loft did not wait for an invitation; he stepped inside, his boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Behind him, the courier remained in the hallway, clutching a digital signature pad. Valeria stood frozen by the entryway console, her fingers instinctively clutching the strap of her beige handbag as the reality of their situation began to crash down around them.
“There must be some kind of mistake,” Julian stammered, his voice lacking its usual smooth confidence. He looked down at the documents embossed with the crest of the state district court. “I complied with all terms of my divorce settlement with Arturiu Mendoza. Every single asset transfer was signed off by independent arbiters.”
The officer, a weathered man with calm, steady eyes, glanced around the high-end apartment before fixing his gaze on Julian.
“Mr. Mendoza’s legal team filed an emergency motion this afternoon,” the officer replied evenly. “They presented forensic accounting records proving that the funds used to purchase your company, this residence, and several offshore accounts were redirected from a restricted family trust without authorization. You have forty-eight hours to surrender all controlled assets.”
With a curt nod, the officer turned and walked out, leaving Julian and Valeria alone in the sudden, suffocating silence of the loft.
Valeria dropped her handbag onto the floor, the metallic clasp clinking loudly against the wood. She stared at Julian, her eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and cold realization.
“You told me your assets were clean,” Valeria said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You swore to me that the money used to set up our life came from your grandfather’s estate. You brought me into this mess under false pretenses.”
“I was protecting us,” Julian shouted, finally letting his restrained facade crack. He slammed his fist against the kitchen counter. “Arthur Mendoza has spent decades crushing everyone who gets in his way. Marrying Arturiu was a war of attrition. I thought I won when the divorce papers were finalized and the division of property went through. I didn't know Eleanor was pulling the strings behind the scenes.”
“Eleanor,” Valeria repeated, the name tasting like poison. “The woman sitting across from him at the restaurant. She knew everything from the very beginning, didn’t she?”
Julian didn't answer. He slumped into a barstool, burying his face in his hands. The blonde hair fell across his forehead, and his light beard twitched with tension.
Valeria walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the glittering city that suddenly felt like a cage. Her mind raced through her options. She had spent years building her reputation in high-society circles, curating an image of effortless elegance and financial security. Being tied to a federal asset freeze and a disgraced corporate fraudster would destroy her social standing overnight.
She turned back to Julian, her expression hardening into absolute resolve.
“If the federal government is seizing your assets, that includes our joint accounts,” Valeria stated, her tone chillingly calm. “Where is the emergency reserve?”
Julian slowly raised his head, a hollow, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“There is no reserve, Valeria,” Julian whispered. “Eleanor froze all corporate and personal liquidity twenty minutes before that officer knocked on our door. We are officially broke.”
