Chapter 12 - The Mid-Air Countdown

The tiny digital display on the gold key glowed with an ominous, steady red light: 00:59:58.

Valeria stared at the numbers ticking backward in real-time, her heart hammering against her ribs with terrifying intensity. The luxurious leather interior of the private jet suddenly felt like a pressurized tomb. She sat completely frozen in her plush seat, the private aviation cabin silent except for the low, monotonous roar of the twin turbine engines outside.

How had the Mendoza crest key gotten into her beige handbag? She had checked every item before leaving the Swiss depository. Arthur and Eleanor had orchestrated her release, handed her federal immunity, and put her on a private jet to Zurich—yet here she was, locked inside a flying trap with a ticking countdown device she didn't understand.

She grabbed the key, holding it up to the cabin light, searching for any kind of switch or disconnect mechanism. The countdown hit 00:58:30.

Click.

A small compartment on the side of the key sprang open automatically, revealing a microscopic micro-SD card nestled inside the gold casing.

Valeria’s breath hitched. She looked around the empty cabin. She was completely alone on the aircraft, save for the pilots locked behind the reinforced cockpit door. She pulled out her sleek travel laptop from her duffel bag, flipped it open, and inserted the micro-SD card into the side port.

A single encrypted file immediately populated the desktop: MENDOZA_FINAL_PROTOCOL.enc.

Without hesitating, she double-clicked the file. A decryption prompt flashed on the screen, requiring a six-digit security code. She stared at the input box, her mind racing. What numbers could possibly unlock a Mendoza family protocol file?

She thought back to the restaurant, the date of Julian and Arturiu’s divorce settlement, the registry numbers of the Swiss vault box—nothing worked. The screen flashed red: Five attempts remaining.

The countdown on the physical key read 00:45:12.

Panic clawed at her throat. She gripped her beige handbag, frantically searching every pocket, every zipper compartment, until her fingers brushed against a folded piece of paper she hadn't noticed earlier—a small receipt from the Swiss depository counter, timestamped exactly three minutes before she was locked in the vault.

Printed at the bottom of the receipt was a sequence of numbers: 412-0819-99.

Valeria’s hands shook as she typed the six digits into the decryption prompt on her laptop: 081999.

The screen blinked green.

Access Granted.

The encrypted file expanded instantly, displaying a high-definition video feed that was broadcasting live from a federal holding cell downtown.

Valeria stared at the screen in absolute disbelief.

Sitting on a metal bench in the holding cell was Julian. But he wasn't alone. Standing outside the reinforced glass partition, adjusting his red pocket square, was Arthur Mendoza. Beside him stood Arturiu and Eleanor, watching Julian with cold, clinical detachment.

The audio feed connected automatically, carrying Arthur’s deep, resonant voice straight through Valeria’s laptop speakers at 35,000 feet in the air.

“You thought you could steal my logistics network and hide behind a federal divorce settlement, Julian,” Arthur said calmly through the computer screen. “You thought Valeria was your ultimate escape hatch.”

Julian looked up, his face gaunt, his blonde hair matted with sweat. “She took the flash drive to Zurich! She has the bearer bonds!”

Arturiu stepped closer to the glass, offering a chilling, humorless smile.

“No, Julian,” Arturiu replied softly. “Valeria delivered the drive right into Eleanor’s hands. She played her part precisely as designed.”
