Chapter 2: The Aftermath

The police arrived shortly after. Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with tired eyes, took Eleanor into custody without a struggle. She offered no resistance, her fiery demeanor replaced by a hollow, vacant stare. In the hospital bed, Sarah gave her statement in a weak, raspy voice. The papers Eleanor had tried to force her to sign were trust documents. Since the tragic death of Sarah’s husband—Eleanor’s only son—Sarah was the sole trustee of a massive charitable foundation. Eleanor, drowning in secret gambling debts, needed control of the assets to save herself from ruin. The monitor, the threats, the violence; it was all a desperate gambit of a woman pushed to the edge by her own destructive choices.
