Chapter 1: The Red Light

The heavy medical monitor slipped from Eleanor’s trembling hands, crashing to the linoleum floor with a deafening shatter. The red light of the ceiling camera blinked with mechanical indifference, an unblinking witness to her desperation. Within seconds, the sterile quiet of the hospital ward was shattered by the blare of the security alarm. Two security guards, followed closely by a frantic nurse, burst through the heavy double doors. Eleanor stood frozen, her chest heaving, the terrifying realization of her actions crashing over her. Sarah, battered and gasping through her oxygen mask, didn't look away from the older woman. There was no triumph in her bruised eyes, only a profound, exhausting sorrow. She had survived.
