Chapter 9

The sunroom grew remarkably quiet after Victoria’s departure. The tension that had gripped the room for days slowly dissipated, replaced by a heavy, reflective calm. Eleanor turned away from the glass door and walked back toward her high-backed velvet chair, though she did not sit down immediately. Instead, she rested her hands on the polished wooden backrest, looking directly at Clara.

"You handled that with remarkable restraint, Clara," Eleanor said, her voice carrying a rare note of genuine acknowledgment. "When I accused you of taking the ring in the foyer last week, I was testing your composure under fire. I needed to see if you would panic or fight back with facts."

Clara met the older woman’s gaze steadily, refusing to soften her expression completely. "You didn't need to humiliate me publicly to test my loyalty to this family, Eleanor."

"In our world, public perception dictates corporate survival," Eleanor replied, her tone pragmatic. "If a threat appears from within, it must be neutralized swiftly and publicly before the board smells blood in the water. You proved your resilience. And more importantly, you proved your competence."

Julian stepped closer to Clara, his posture relaxed now that the immediate threat was neutralized. He looked down at the table where the manila folder rested. "The board will need a full briefing on the asset recovery by tomorrow morning. With Victoria out of the picture, we have a massive leadership vacuum in the international division."

Eleanor nodded slowly, her eyes fixed on Clara. "Clara Vance. Are you prepared to step back into your rightful position as Senior Managing Auditor and oversee the full structural audit of our overseas holdings?"

Clara looked around the sunroom, taking in the familiar elegance of the estate that had tried to cast her out. She thought of the sleepless nights, the rigorous data mining, and the quiet determination that had brought her back through these doors.

"I will take the position on one condition, Eleanor," Clara said calmly.

Eleanor raised a silver eyebrow, a flicker of amusement crossing her weathered face. "Conditions? You drive out an embezzler and you’re already negotiating from a position of strength?"

"My conditions are simple," Clara said, her voice unwavering. "No more secret loyalty tests. No more public accusations without due process. And full executive autonomy over the compliance department. If I see financial rot, I cut it out immediately—no family exceptions."

Julian let out a quiet, appreciative breath, watching Clara with profound admiration.

Eleanor paused for a long moment, studying the younger woman’s resolute expression. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of the matriarch’s mouth.

"Agreed," Eleanor said softly. "Welcome home, Clara."
