Chapter 6

The rain outside intensified, drumming a steady, relentless beat against the glass of Clara’s apartment windows. Julian sat on the edge of the gray velvet sofa, his elbows resting on his knees, staring blankly at the abstract painting hanging across the room. The weight of his own willful blindness over the past year seemed to press down on his shoulders.

"I trusted her," Julian said, his voice barely audible over the sound of the storm. "When Eleanor brought Victoria into our circle after the merger, she seemed so competent, so attuned to the family’s traditions. I thought... I thought we were building a partnership."

"You were building an empire of cards, Julian, and Victoria was the one quietly pulling the foundation stones out from underneath," Clara said, walking over to stand a few feet away from him. She crossed her arms loosely over her blouse, maintaining a professional distance. "She didn't just want to manage the accounts. She wanted to leverage Sterling Global against foreign debt so the entire holding company would default. Once in default, the restructuring clauses would hand controlling interest to an anonymous third-party buyer."

Julian looked up sharply, his dark eyes wide. "How could you possibly know about the buyout clause? That part of the agreement was sealed under a strict confidentiality clause."

"Because Marcus traced the digital certificate on the confidential clause back to an IP address registered to an apartment in downtown Boston," Clara answered calmly. "An apartment leased under Victoria Vance’s maiden name—long before she ever introduced herself to your grandmother."

Julian stood up abruptly, pacing toward the window as he absorbed the staggering scale of the betrayal. "She lied about who she is. Everything—from the way she met Eleanor at the charity gala to the way she positioned herself in our lives—was a premeditated infiltration."

"It was," Clara agreed. "Which brings us back to the missing diamond ring from the other night. That wasn't a random theft by me, Julian. It was a setup designed to create a public scandal so toxic that Eleanor would banish me from the estate before I could run my quarterly audit. They needed me gone because I was looking at the exact server logs that proved Victoria was siphoning funds."

Julian stopped pacing, turning to face her with a look of profound regret. "I let Eleanor do that to you. I stood right there in the foyer while my grandmother humiliated you. I watched Victoria step in and mark her territory, and I didn't say a single word to stop it."

"You were protecting your family’s image," Clara said, her tone devoid of bitterness, which somehow made his guilt sting all the more. "That’s what the Sterlings have always done. You hide the rot behind polished white blazers and pristine marble steps until the whole structure collapses from the inside."

"I want to fix it," Julian said, stepping closer to her, his voice urgent and sincere. "I have the voting power to freeze the board and revoke Victoria’s executive access tomorrow morning. But I need your help, Clara. I need you back at the firm. Without your forensic audit, the board will just protect themselves and vote me down as an erratic heir."

Clara looked at him for a long moment, weighing the risks, the politics, and the personal cost of walking back into the lion’s den she had just escaped.
