Chapter 4

The single sheet of paper rested between Julian’s hands like unexploded ordnance. His eyes scanned the routing numbers, the transfer dates, and the corporate entity name—Vance Holdings International. The initial shock on his face quickly curdled into a tight, defensive mask. He looked up, his gaze fixing on Clara with a mixture of disbelief and guarded anger.
"This is a fabricated document," Julian said, though his voice lacked its usual unshakeable resonance. He slid the paper away from himself, as if physical distance from the evidence could render it false. "Internal routing errors happen during audits, Clara. You know how complex our subsidiary networks are."
"An error doesn't systematically drain operational reserves into a private holding account registered under your fiancée’s maiden name," Clara replied, her tone devastatingly calm. She did not raise her voice; she let the undeniable gravity of the facts do the heavy lifting.
Victoria leaned forward, her face flushing with genuine agitation. The smooth, composed facade she had worn since entering the room cracked under the pressure. "This is absurd! Julian, you aren't actually listening to her, are you? She’s bitter because Eleanor exposed her character in front of the entire family. She’s trying to deflect blame for the theft of the family diamond by dragging my name through the mud with forged paperwork!"
Eleanor raised a wrinkled hand, silencing both of them with a single, imperious gesture. The older woman turned her cold, sharp gaze toward Clara. The diamond ring in question was missing, yes, but Eleanor was astute enough to recognize that a missing piece of jewelry was a minor loss compared to a corporate mutiny.
"Clara," Eleanor said, her voice dry and cutting as old parchment. "You have always been overly ambitious, but I never took you for a desperate forger. If you have an actual grievance with the corporate restructuring, present it through proper legal channels instead of staging courtroom dramas in my company’s boardroom."
"The legal channels are already in motion, Eleanor," Clara said evenly. She stood up, gathering her portfolio with slow, deliberate movements. "Marcus Thorne filed the preliminary injunction with the federal trade commission this morning at nine o'clock. By tomorrow afternoon, every account tied to Vance Holdings International will be frozen pending a forensic audit."
Victoria stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the parquet floor. "You wouldn't dare."
"Try me," Clara replied softly.
She turned and walked toward the heavy oak doors, leaving the three of them sitting in a silence charged with impending ruin. As she pulled the door open and stepped out into the corridor, she let out a quiet breath. The psychological warfare had begun, and the Sterling family was finally starting to realize that the person they had tried to push out the door held the keys to their entire empire.
Julian remained seated in the boardroom, staring at the empty chair across from him. The seed of doubt, planted by Clara’s unshakeable composure and concrete data, had taken root in his mind. He turned his head slowly to look at Victoria, who was breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling beneath her green blazer.

"Victoria," Julian said quietly, the word hanging heavily in the air between them. "Tell me that paper is a forgery."
