Chapter 10

The morning board meeting proceeded with an efficiency that had eluded Sterling Global for months. With Victoria’s digital footprint erased and her co-conspirators in the overseas division quietly resigning under threat of federal prosecution, the executive committee voted unanimously to restore Clara to her senior partnership role. The smooth transition of power was a testament to Clara’s unyielding preparation and Marcus Thorne’s flawless forensic execution.
Later that afternoon, Clara sat alone in her newly renovated corner office on the fortieth floor of the Sterling Tower. The panoramic view of the downtown skyline stretched out beneath her through floor-to-ceiling windows. The mahogany desk was clear, save for a sleek laptop and a small blue velvet ring box resting near the corner.
The box wasn't the original one Eleanor had brandished during the initial confrontation. This was a duplicate Marcus had procured from the estate’s security inventory, housing a replica diamond ring under the same cold LED light. It served as a permanent reminder that in high society, the things that sparkled the brightest often concealed the sharpest edges.
A soft knock at her door interrupted her thoughts.
Julian walked in, holding two cups of black coffee. He had changed into a dark gray suit, his silver tie immaculate. He set one cup down on the corner of her desk before taking a seat in the leather guest chair opposite her.
"The auditors from Zurich just signed off on the asset recovery," Julian said, offering a tired but genuine smile. "The four million has been successfully wired back into our primary reserve accounts. Vance Holdings is officially defunct."
"It was never a legitimate holding company to begin with," Clara said, taking a sip of the coffee. "Victoria was just a front for a larger predatory conglomerate looking to short our stock during the restructuring."
Julian leaned back, resting his hands on the armrests. "Speaking of Victoria... she’s gone completely underground. Her lawyers attempted to file an injunction to block the freezing of her personal assets, but federal prosecutors threw it out once the digital trail from Boston was verified."
Clara looked out the window, watching a helicopter trace a slow arc across the grey clouds. "People like Victoria don't simply disappear, Julian. They adapt. They find new entry points into vulnerable institutions."
"We’ve tightened our cybersecurity protocols," Julian assured her. "No one gets past compliance without dual-key authorization now. The vulnerability that let her in has been permanently sealed."
Clara turned her gaze back to him, her dark eyes softening slightly. "You carry a lot of guilt over how easily you let her manipulate you, don't you?"
Julian looked down at his coffee cup, swirling the dark liquid slowly. "I trusted pedigree over proof. I assumed that because someone was introduced into our circle by Eleanor, they belonged there. It was a blind spot that almost cost my family everything."
May you like
"It’s a blind spot shared by everyone who inherits an empire instead of building one from the ground up," Clara said gently, her tone devoid of condescension. "The difference is that you recognized the rot before the structure collapsed."
