Chapter 7

The morning sun broke through the dissipating storm clouds, casting a sharp, brilliant light over the cobblestone courtyard of the Sterling estate. Clara stepped out of the black luxury car, her posture immaculate in a tailored cream-colored blazer and dark trousers. Her beige handbag hung loosely from her left arm, and the small scratch on her hand had completely healed into a faint, invisible line.

She wasn't alone this time. Julian walked beside her, his navy blue suit buttoned, his silver tie straight, projecting an unyielding wall of united front. Together, they walked up the marble steps where, just days before, Eleanor had publicly cast Clara out of the family circle.

The heavy oak doors of the mansion swung open before they even reached the threshold, revealing Butler Thomas standing at attention. His eyes widened slightly at the sight of Clara returning alongside the primary heir, but years of disciplined discretion kept his expression entirely neutral.

"Master Julian. Miss Vance," Thomas said, bowing his head respectfully as they stepped into the grand foyer.

"Where is Eleanor, Thomas?" Julian asked, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no argument.

"In the sunroom, sir. Along with Miss Victoria."

Without waiting for further announcement, Julian led Clara down the long, arched corridor toward the glass-enclosed sunroom overlooking the manicured back gardens. The sound of their footsteps echoed against the stone floor, crisp and deliberate.

When Julian pushed open the double glass doors, the conversation inside abruptly died. Eleanor Sterling was seated in her high-backed velvet chair, holding a porcelain teacup with delicate precision. Victoria stood by the window, dressed in an emerald-green silk blouse that matched her calculating demeanor. As she saw Clara walk in beside Julian, the color drained from Victoria’s face, replaced by a sudden, sharp flash of panic that she desperately tried to mask behind a cold smile.

"Julian," Eleanor said, setting her teacup down with a sharp clink against the saucer. Her silver hair caught the bright morning light. "What is the meaning of this? You bring an unauthorized intruder back into my home after the very scandal she caused?"

"The only scandal here, Grandmother, is the one Victoria manufactured," Julian said, his voice ringing clear and steady through the sunroom. He walked to the center of the room, standing beside Clara like a shield and a partner combined. "The missing diamond ring was never stolen by Clara. It was misplaced by Victoria as a distraction while she used my master override key to transfer four million dollars of corporate capital to an offshore shell company."

Victoria scoffed, stepping forward with a theatrical display of offense. "Julian, have you completely lost your mind? You’re listening to a disgraced auditor who has been plotting against this family ever since she was denied a senior partnership seat!"

"I checked the digital signatures, Victoria," Julian said, turning his cold, piercing gaze directly onto her. "The IP logs from the Geneva transfers trace right back to your private Boston residence. The game is over."

Victoria’s composure finally shattered completely. Her hands began to tremble, and the cold, untouchable mask melted into an expression of raw, unadulterated venom.
