Chapter 14

The evening lights of the city began to flicker on, painting the glass exterior of the Sterling Tower with shimmering reflections of gold and amber. Clara sat at her desk in her private corner office, closing the final physical ledger of the fiscal year. The blue velvet ring box sat quietly on the shelf behind her—not as a symbol of accusation or trauma, but as a permanent reminder of the trial by fire that had forged her true strength.
The intercom on her desk chimed softly.
"Miss Vance," Marcus Thorne’s voice came through the speaker. "The federal prosecutors just sent over the final case closure documents regarding Vance Holdings International. Victoria’s offshore assets have been fully liquidated and returned to the federal restitution fund. Her legal team has officially exhausted all appellate options."
"Thank you, Marcus," Clara replied evenly. "File it under permanent archive storage. We’re closing that chapter tonight."
"Will do, Clara. Good night."
Clara switched off her desk lamp, letting the ambient city light fill the spacious office. She stood up, slipped her beige handbag over her shoulder, and walked toward the private elevator that connected her floor directly to the executive parking garage.
When she reached the ground floor, she stepped out into the cool autumn air. A black luxury car waited by the curb, its engine idling softly in the quiet courtyard. The driver’s door opened, and Julian stepped out, dressed in his navy blue suit and silver tie, holding the door open for her with a warm, welcoming smile.
Clara walked across the polished pavement, her heels clicking softly against the stone. She did not look back at the threshold where Eleanor had once stood in judgment, nor did she harbor any lingering shadows of the betrayal that had tried to tear her world apart.
She slid into the leather-lined interior of the car, and Julian followed closely behind her, pulling the door shut with a quiet, solid thud that sealed out the noise of the outside world.
As the car pulled away smoothly from the curb and glided out onto the illuminated boulevard, Clara reached out and rested her hand gently on the console. Julian’s fingers covered hers, their grip firm, steady, and unbreakable.
