Chapter 8

The silence in the sunroom was suffocating. The fragrant scent of blooming jasmine from the garden outside contrasted sharply with the icy tension inside the glass walls. Victoria stood frozen, her eyes darting between Julian’s unyielding stance and Clara’s calm, analytical expression.

Eleanor Sterling did not immediately react. The older woman’s weathered hands remained resting on the armrests of her chair, her sharp eyes shifting slowly from her grandson to Victoria. Decades of running a multi-billion-dollar empire had taught Eleanor how to read the subtle micro-expressions of guilt long before any formal proof was laid on the table. She saw the tremor in Victoria’s fingers, the slight dilation of her pupils, and the desperate tightening of her jaw.

"Is this true, Victoria?" Eleanor asked, her voice dangerously quiet, carrying the weight of an undisputed matriarch.

Victoria forced a brittle, defensive laugh, though her voice lacked its former conviction. "Eleanor, you can't possibly believe him over me! We’ve spent months building the modernization strategy together. Julian is simply letting his personal history with Clara cloud his judgment during a routine corporate dispute."

"It’s not a dispute, Victoria. It’s a federal wire fraud investigation," Marcus Thorne’s voice echoed smoothly from the doorway.

Everyone turned. Marcus stepped into the sunroom, holding a thick manila folder. He hadn't been invited, but Julian had instructed him to wait in the foyer just in case the confrontation required immediate legal backup. Marcus walked up beside Clara, placing the folder down on a glass side table.

"I represent Clara Vance and the forensic accounting division of our firm," Marcus said, flashing a crisp business card before sliding it toward Eleanor. "We’ve just executed a freeze order on Vance Holdings International across three separate international jurisdictions. Every cent that was siphoned from Sterling Global accounts has been traced back to personal assets purchased under Victoria’s maiden name—including the luxury apartment in Boston and the dummy accounts funding your lifestyle."

Victoria took a sharp step backward, her back hitting the glass pane of the sunroom wall. The green silk blouse rose and fell rapidly with her shallow, panicked breathing. She looked at Eleanor, expecting the older woman to protect her, to dismiss the outsiders, to defend family honor above all else.

Instead, Eleanor slowly rose from her chair. Despite her age, the matriarch stood tall, her white blazer radiating absolute authority. She walked past Julian and stopped two feet away from Victoria.

"In this family," Eleanor said, her voice freezing the air in the room, "we protect our own. But we do not tolerate parasites who infiltrate our legacy under false pretenses."

"Eleanor, you don't understand—" Victoria stammered, her voice cracking for the first time.

"Silence," Eleanor commanded, raising a single hand. "Thomas!"

The butler appeared instantly at the doorway, having waited just out of sight.

"Escort Miss Vance off the premises immediately," Eleanor instructed without breaking eye contact with Victoria. "And ensure her digital access badges are permanently deactivated across all company servers."

Victoria opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The realization that her meticulously planned corporate takeover had completely collapsed hit her with staggering force. She grabbed her beige handbag from the chair, shot a look of pure, unadulterated hatred toward Clara, and stormed out of the sunroom, her heels clicking furiously against the stone floor until the heavy front doors slammed shut in the distance.
