Chapter 3

The executive boardroom of Sterling Global Enterprises smelled of aged mahogany and expensive leather. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished conference table. At the head of the table sat Julian Sterling, looking every bit the corporate heir in his navy blue suit and silver tie. To his right sat Victoria Vance, draped in a sharp emerald-green blazer that mirrored the color of the dress she had worn days before, projecting an aura of corporate authority she had not truly earned.
Eleanor Sterling occupied the seat of honor next to her grandson, her white blazer immaculate, her posture rigid. She had insisted on attending this emergency session, ostensibly to address the "security breach" involving Clara, though the real agenda was sealing Clara’s permanent ouster from the partnership.
When the heavy oak doors swung open, it wasn't a security guard or an administrative assistant who walked in. It was Clara. She wore a tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit over a pristine white silk blouse, her long dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon. She carried a single leather portfolio, her expression utterly impassive.
Julian’s pen paused over his notepad. A flicker of genuine surprise crossed his handsome face before he quickly masked it with a neutral expression. Victoria’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her fingers tightening slightly around the handle of her silver pen. Eleanor’s eyes narrowed instantly, a silent flash of hostility crossing the older woman’s weathered features.
"Clara," Julian said, his voice carrying a cautious, probing tone. "This is a closed executive session. Your credentials were suspended pending the internal investigation regarding the missing ring."
"Good morning, Julian. Eleanor. Victoria," Clara said, her voice calm, measured, and entirely devoid of defensive posturing. She did not wait for an invitation; she pulled out the chair directly opposite Victoria, sat down with deliberate grace, and placed her portfolio flat on the wood. "I’m not here to discuss personal jewelry, Julian. I’m here to exercise my statutory right as a ten-percent voting partner to review the Q3 asset consolidation reports."
Victoria let out a soft, dismissive chuckle, leaning back in her chair. "Clara, let’s not embarrass yourself further. You were caught red-handed in the foyer with missing inventory questions hanging over your head. The board has no appetite for your theatrical diversions."
"The only theater here, Victoria, is the sudden urgency with which you and Julian signed off on the offshore restructuring project last Tuesday," Clara countered smoothly, her gaze locking onto Victoria’s eyes without a single blink.
Julian straightened in his chair, his eyes darting between the two women. "Clara, watch your tone. Victoria acted with my full authorization as part of the modernization initiative."
"Did she also act with your authorization when she funneled four million dollars of operational capital into an unverified shell company in the Caymans?" Clara asked, sliding a single printed sheet of certified bank routing data across the mahogany table toward Julian.

The silence in the boardroom became absolute. Even the steady hum of the ventilation system seemed to drop away. Julian looked down at the paper, his face draining of color.
