CHAPTER 4: CONFRONTING THE PAST

Morning light filtered gray and cool through the heavy drapery of the estate. Rain continued to drizzle against the glass, reflecting the gloomy mood inside the house.

Julian spent the night in his car, his eyes bloodshot and dark circles framing his face when he finally walked back through the front door. He found Victoria sitting on the bottom steps of the grand staircase, still dressed in the silver gown from the night before, her hair disheveled and eyes swollen.

""Julian,"" she whimpered, standing up unsteadily. ""Please talk to me.""

Julian stopped a few feet away from her. The anger from the night before had faded, replaced by an overwhelming exhaustion. ""Why didn't you tell me when you miscarried, Victoria? Why didn't you trust me to grieve with you?""

Victoria collapsed back onto the stair step, burying her head in her knees. ""Because you looked so happy,"" she sobbed softly. ""Your father finally looked at you with pride. You've been trying to earn his approval your entire life, Julian. When the doctor told me the baby was gone... I felt like a failure. I thought if I told you, you'd look at me with disappointment. I was terrified of losing you.""

Julian knelt down in front of her, his hands trembling as he reached out, touching her shoulder lightly before pulling back. ""You thought I loved you because of a baby? You thought my love was conditioned on providing an heir?""

""Isn't it?"" Victoria raised her head, looking at him with desperate eyes. ""Look at this family, Julian! Everything here is about legacy, appearance, and perfection! Look at Clara—she was pushed to the background the moment Ethan died because she didn't fit the high-society mold. I didn't want to become invisible!""

The words hung in the air, heavy and sharp. Julian stood up, looking around the massive foyer, noticing the grand oil paintings of his ancestors hanging on the walls. For the first time in his life, he realized how toxic the pressure of perfection had become within his family home.

From the top of the stairs, Arthur stood watching the young couple. He had heard every word Victoria said. The reality of her statement struck him like a physical blow. He had spent decades building an empire, believing he was protecting his family, only to realize he had built a prison of expectations.
