CHAPTER 1: THE TENSION IN THE ROOM

The dining room fell into an uncomfortable, absolute silence. A crystal chandelier hung above the polished mahogany table, casting warm, flickering light over half-eaten gourmet plates and silver cutlery. Seconds ago, laughter had filled the room. Now, the atmosphere felt heavy enough to crush anyone who dared to speak next.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Sterling, the patriarch of the family. His sharp blue eyes narrowed as he shifted his gaze between the little girl, Lily, and his daughter-in-law, Victoria—the woman wearing the sparkling silver sequin dress. Victoria’s face had lost every trace of color. Her hand subconsciously hovered over her swollen abdomen, her fingers trembling against the heavy fabric.

""What did you just say, Lily?"" Arthur asked, his voice low, steady, and terrifyingly calm.

Lily, oblivious to the storm she had just started, tilted her small head. Her big, dark eyes flickered toward her mother, Clara, who was standing a few feet away in her yellow strapless dress. Clara looked pale, her chest rising and falling with fast, shallow breaths.

""I saw her,"" Lily repeated softly, her innocent voice ringing clearly through the silent hall. ""She put the soft thing in the wooden cupboard. The one near the garden door. It had blue flowers painted on it.""

Victoria swallowed hard. ""She's... she's confusing things, Arthur,"" Victoria stammered, looking around the table for support. She reached out to grasp her husband’s hand, but Julian, the man in the sleek black tuxedo, slowly pulled his hand back. He looked at Victoria not with anger, but with a horrifying realization that shattered his calm expression.

""Victoria,"" Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. ""Look at me.""

""Julian, please, don't listen to a four-year-old child,"" Victoria pleaded, a single tear escaping her eye, threatening to ruin her meticulously styled makeup. ""She doesn't know what she's talking about. Clara is teaching her to lie to embarrass us!""

""Don't you dare bring my daughter into your lies!"" Clara snapped, taking a step forward. Her voice shook, but her eyes held an unwavering protective fire. ""Lily doesn't lie. She spent all afternoon playing near the sunroom while you were changing.""

The guests around the table began whispering, ducking their heads as they exchanged uneasy glances. Arthur stood up slowly, the heavy wooden chair scraping loudly against the marble floor.

""Enough,"" Arthur commanded. ""We will resolve this right now. William, go check the sunroom cupboard.""
