CHAPTER 10: HEALING OLD WOUNDS

That evening, Eleanor sat at the dinner table with Arthur, Julian, Clara, and Lily. The atmosphere was vastly different from the tense dinner months ago. The table was dressed simply, and the conversation was warm and grounded.
After dinner, Clara and Eleanor sat alone on the outdoor porch, listening to the crickets singing in the evening summer air.
""I saw the news articles months ago,"" Eleanor confessed softly, holding a warm mug between her hands. ""About the scandal in this house. I assumed you were living in a golden cage full of lies, Clara. I came here expecting to rescue you.""
Clara smiled gently, looking out into the peaceful garden. ""I used to think this house was a cage too, Mom. But wealth or poverty doesn't make a home honest or dishonest—people do. The people in this house were hurting and lost, but we faced the truth together.""
""I was wrong about Ethan,"" Eleanor admitted, her voice trembling with emotion. ""And I was wrong to abandon you when you needed a mother most. I let my own bitterness about rich people blind me to the man Ethan was, and the mother you were becoming.""

Clara reached over, holding her mother’s hand tightly. ""You don't have to apologize anymore, Mom. You are here now. That’s all that matters to Lily and me.""
Arthur stood near the study window, looking out at the mother and daughter reconciling on the porch. He felt a deep sense of gratitude. For years, he believed that maintaining control and financial power was the only way to preserve a family. Now, he was witnessing firsthand that true strength came from vulnerability, forgiveness, and the courage to strip away illusions.
