CHAPTER 3: THE AFTERMATH

By midnight, the grand Sterling estate was eerily quiet. The long dining table remained uncleaned, surrounded by abandoned glasses and cold meals. In the study, Arthur sat alone in the dark, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows into the rainy garden.

Julian had driven off into the night without a word, leaving Victoria weeping in the guest room. Meanwhile, Clara sat in the second-floor nursery, watching Lily sleep peacefully in the large canopy bed.

Clara had married into the Sterling family five years ago, marrying Arthur's youngest son, Ethan, who tragically passed away in a car accident shortly before Lily was born. Since then, Clara had lived in the shadow of the wealthy family, often treated as an outsider by Victoria, who held a prominent social standing. Victoria had always looked down on Clara’s modest background, constantly competing for Arthur's approval and favor.

A soft knock on the door broke Clara's thoughts. Arthur walked in, his frame looking surprisingly fragile without his usual tailored suit jacket.

""Is she asleep?"" Arthur asked softly, looking at his granddaughter.

""Yes,"" Clara answered gently. ""She's exhausted.""

Arthur walked over, resting his hand on the wooden bed frame. ""I came to apologize, Clara. Tonight... things could have turned out much worse if the truth had stayed hidden longer. But I am ashamed that my family environment forced you and Lily to feel unsafe.""

""It wasn't your fault, Arthur,"" Clara said, standing up. ""Victoria was desperate, and Julian was blinded by hope. When people are driven by fear, they make terrible choices.""

Arthur looked at Clara with renewed respect. For years, he had viewed her as a quiet, timid girl who merely survived off his family's generosity. Tonight, he saw her true strength—a mother who stood grounded in integrity while everything around her collapsed.

""Julian came back an hour ago,"" Arthur said heavily. ""He’s sitting in his car down the driveway. He won't come inside. Victoria has locked herself in her room. I don't know how a family recovers from something like this.""

""Healing doesn't start by pretending the damage isn't there,"" Clara replied softly. ""It starts by facing it. Tomorrow, everyone will have to make a choice.""
