CHAPTER 2: SHATTERED ILLUSIONS

William, the eldest son, nodded sternly and stepped away from the table. Every second he was gone felt like an eternity. Victoria sat frozen in her seat, her breath hitched, while Julian refused to make eye contact with anyone.
When William returned, he wasn't carrying an accusation. He was holding a large, floral-patterned foam cushion with adjustable straps, designed specifically for theatrical costume padding. He set it down on the empty chair beside Arthur without saying a single word.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Victoria buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as suppressed sobs finally broke through her composed exterior. ""I had to,"" she wept, her voice muffled. ""I had to do it, Julian! You don't understand the pressure!""
Julian stared at the cushion, then slowly shifted his gaze to Victoria. The shock on his face turned into a mixture of betrayal and profound sorrow. ""Seven months, Victoria,"" he said softly, his voice barely audible over her crying. ""For seven months, we celebrated every doctor's visit. We bought a crib. We painted the nursery. My parents announced their first grandchild to the entire city... And it was all a lie?""
""I was pregnant!"" Victoria sobbed, looking up desperately, her mascara running down her cheeks. ""In the beginning, I was! But... three months in, I lost the baby. I was so terrified you would leave me. Your father wanted an heir so badly... I thought if I just bought some time, I could fix it, I could adopt, I could...""
""You lied to my entire family,"" Julian interrupted, his voice hollow. ""You made me feel like the happiest man on earth based on a illusion.""
Arthur closed his eyes for a long moment, visibly aging ten years in a matter of seconds. The prestige of the Sterling family meant everything to him, but this was a wound far deeper than public scandal. It was a complete fracture of trust at the core of his household.
""The dinner is over,"" Arthur announced to the room, his voice raspy. ""To all our guests, please accept my deepest apologies. Cars will take you home immediately.""
As guests quickly gathered their coats and hurried toward the exit, Clara walked over to Lily, wrapping her arms around her small shoulders. Lily looked up at her mother, confused by the heavy grief suffocating the room.

""Mommy,"" Lily whispered, clutching Clara's yellow dress. ""Did I do something bad?""
Clara knelt down, kissing her daughter's forehead gently. ""No, sweetheart. You told the truth. Truth is never bad, even when it hurts.""
