Chapter 6: A Fragment of Hope

At 2:00 AM, under the cover of torrential rain, two unmarked sedans pulled up to the rear entrance of the Vance Medical Research Center. Mark led Eleanor and Victoria through the dimly lit basement corridors, flanked by Detective Miller and two trusted federal agents.

The facility was eerily quiet, the hum of floor generators vibrating through the concrete walls. They reached a reinforced steel door marked with high-voltage warnings. Mark inserted the black keycard into the reader. The scanner hummed, glowing amber.

“Insert the micro-chip,” Mark instructed. Eleanor carefully slotted the chip into the digital port beside the pad. A chime echoed through the corridor as the light turned a solid emerald green. Heavy pneumatic locks disengaged with a deep metallic thud.

The vault door swung open, revealing a temperature-controlled server room dominated by a single glass console. In the center sat a solid-state drive labeled “Project Hope - Dedicated to Lily.”

Before Mark could touch the drive, a sharp click echoed from the shadows behind them. The overhead lights flickered on, illuminating Arthur Sterling standing near the doorway, flanked by two armed security guards. Sterling’s face was twisted in a sinister smile.

“I must thank you, Eleanor,” Sterling sneered, raising a silenced pistol. “I couldn’t bypass Clara’s biometrics on my own. You’ve saved me months of work.”
