The following morning, Mark arrived at the estate accompanied by two federal forensic technicians. The study was transformed into a command center, with laptops and decryption hardware spread across the antique oak table. The black electronic keycard lay in the center, paired with the micro-chip from Lily’s locket.
“The encryption is state-of-the-art,” Mark explained, pointing to a rapid sequence of code scrolling across a monitor. “Clara built a dual-verification system. The keycard grants physical access to the vault under the Vance Medical Center, but the chip acts as the decryption key for the files inside.”
Eleanor watched closely. “What is inside that vault, Mark?”
“Not just financial records,” Mark replied softly. “Clara was a brilliant genetic researcher. Before Sterling compromised the foundation, Clara discovered a breakthrough therapy for pediatric neuro-degenerative disorders. She knew Sterling wanted to sell the patent to a foreign conglomerate for billions, pricing out normal families.”
Victoria stepped forward, her voice steady. “That’s why Sterling wanted her silenced. If Clara published the patent under an open-source humanitarian license, Sterling’s syndicate would lose everything.”
