Chapter 1: Shadows in the Chapel

The air inside the memorial chapel was heavy with the fragrance of white lilies and unspoken grief. Eleanor Vance sat near the altar, her body stiff under her dark tweed jacket, her fingers trembling against her pearl necklace. Beside her stood Victoria, radiating glamour even in mourning, her champagne satin dress shimmering faintly against the dim stained-glass light. Between them, four-year-old Lily clung tightly to Eleanor's skirt, her small eyes wide with innocent confusion.

When the heavy oak doors burst open, the silence shattered. Detective Mark Hayes strode down the central aisle, his dark suit immaculate and his eyes fixed with razor focus on the altar. Behind him, Detective Miller followed, trying in vain to slow his partner’s hurried pace. Heads turned, whispers cascaded across the pews, but Mark did not flinch. He reached the foot of the dais and stopped, unzipping a leather briefcase with deliberate precision.

“Not the time, Mark,” Miller warned under his breath, placing a firm hand on Mark’s arm. But Mark brushed it off, pulling out a sealed plastic evidence bag. Inside rested a sleek, black electronic keycard stamped with a silver crest.

Victoria gasped, her cheeks draining of color. She pulled Eleanor’s shoulder instinctively, leaning in to whisper, “I didn’t… I swear I didn’t know.” Her voice quivered with terror, but her eyes darted toward the exit. Eleanor, overcome by raw agony, felt a fresh wave of tears stream down her face. The keycard belonged to Clara—her late daughter whose sudden death had brought them to this sanctuary.

Mark stepped forward, holding the bag in the light. “This was found in Clara’s private vehicle, concealed beneath the dashboard,” Mark announced, his voice reverberating off the stone walls. “It accesses a vault registered under the Vance Foundation. Someone here tried to wipe the server logs three hours ago.”

Eleanor looked at Mark, her heart hammering against her ribs. She saw not just an investigator, but a man desperate for answers. “She didn’t!” Mark suddenly roared, his gaze locking onto Victoria, whose trembling hand had dropped from Eleanor’s shoulder. “She didn’t commit suicide, and she didn't act alone!” The tension in the room snapped like a taut wire.
