HER LAST BREATH BEFORE DAWN / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Midnight Strike**

At 2:15 AM, the quiet rural serenity was shattered by the sharp, metallic crunch of tires rolling over gravel.

Marcus was awake in an instant. From the living room window, he saw an unmarked black SUV idling at the bottom of the long driveway, its headlights extinguished. Two figures dressed in dark hoodies slipped out of the vehicle, carrying heavy crowbars and a military-grade duffel bag.

"Laura, wake up. Take Chloe and Sarah into the storm cellar right now," Marcus ordered in a low, urgent whisper, drawing his service pistol and racking the slide.

Laura didn't waste a second. She scooped Chloe into her arms, whispering soothing words to keep her calm, and followed Sarah through the concealed pantry hatch down into the reinforced concrete storm cellar beneath the farmhouse floor.

Above them, glass shattered as the front living room window gave way.

"Police! Drop your weapons and get on the ground!" Marcus shouted, his voice booming through the small house.

Gunshots cracked through the dark—two deafening pops that tore through the drywall. Marcus returned fire, aiming low. A loud groan followed, accompanied by the clatter of a dropped weapon. The second intruder shouted in panic, dragging his wounded accomplice out through the broken kitchen door. Within seconds, the roar of the SUV’s engine tore into the night as the assailants sped away into the darkness.

Down in the cellar, Chloe clung tightly to Laura’s neck, her small body trembling, but she didn't wheeze. Laura stroked her hair rhythmically, holding the blue inhaler ready in her pocket.

"Are you okay, baby?" Laura whispered.

Chloe looked up, her hazel eyes glistening in the dim flashlight beam, displaying an inner courage far beyond her years. "I'm not scared, mommy. Because you're holding my hand."
