HER LAST BREATH BEFORE DAWN

At 7:00 AM, the door to the hospital room opened, revealing Officer Marcus Miller. He had changed out of his standard patrol uniform into a crisp, dark navy tactical shirt. In his hand, he held two cardboard cups of black coffee.

"Thought you might need this," Marcus said, extending a cup toward Laura.

"Thank you, Officer Miller," Laura said, accepting the warmth gratefully. "How... how did the arraignment go?"

Marcus pulled up a wooden chair, his expression turning solemn. "Evelyn’s high-priced defense attorney posted her fifty-thousand-dollar bond before sunrise. She’s currently out on bail, staying at her downtown penthouse under temporary electronic monitoring."

Laura’s hand tightened around the paper cup until the cardboard buckled. "She tried to suffocate my daughter through deliberate negligence, and she walked out of jail in under twelve hours?"

"The legal system moves slowly, Laura, especially when money is involved," Marcus replied calmly, his deep voice carrying a grounding authority. "Evelyn Sterling holds considerable influence in this county. Her late husband was a judge, and her family practically funded the city hall renovation. But here is the good news: the magistrate granted an emergency temporary restraining order. She cannot come within five hundred feet of you, Chloe, or Chloe’s school."

"A piece of paper won't stop Evelyn," Laura said bitterly. "She thinks rules are written for ordinary people, not for Sterlings."

"Which is why you need to be prepared," Marcus said, leaning in. "She will try to spin this. She’ll claim you’re an unfit mother, that you neglected Chloe’s asthma management, that she was merely stepping in to handle an unruly child. You need a fierce family law attorney, and you need to secure all your assets before she freezes the family trust."

Laura looked at her daughter sleeping peacefully on the bed. "I don't care about the Sterling family trust. I don't care about the estate or the inheritance. I just want my daughter to breathe freely."
