Chapter 10: Unmasking the Truth**

Three weeks later, the United States District Court in downtown Capital City was packed to maximum capacity. Journalists, television cameras, and community members filled every bench of the grand oak-paneled courtroom.

Evelyn Sterling sat at the defense table, clad in an orange prison jumpsuit, her silver hair unkempt, the haughty arrogance entirely stripped away. Facing over twenty federal counts with overwhelming forensic evidence, her legal team had advised her to accept a plea agreement to avoid a mandatory life sentence.

Laura took the witness stand to deliver her victim impact statement. She wore a simple, tailored navy suit. She looked poised, dignified, and unbroken.

"For years, people believed Evelyn Sterling was a pillar of philanthropy," Laura addressed the judge, her voice resonant and clear. "They saw the charity galas, the marble plaques with her name engraved in gold, and the polished smiles in society magazines. But behind closed doors, power was her only god. She believed money gave her the right to dictate who lived, who suffered, and who had the right to breathe."

Laura turned to look directly at Evelyn.

"You took my husband’s peace, and you tried to take my daughter’s life. But you failed. Your legacy will not be remembered by the buildings you bought, but by the justice you could not escape."

The judge nodded solemnly before banging the heavy wooden gavel down onto the sound block.

"Evelyn Sterling, for the charges of federal embezzlement, conspiracy to commit witness tampering, and reckless endangerment of a minor, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."

As the bailiffs escorted Evelyn out through the side security door, the courtroom erupted in applause. Laura stepped down from the stand, taking a deep, liberating breath. The nightmare was finally over.
