Chapter 2: Cold Wards and Silent Vows**

The pediatric intensive care unit at St. Jude Memorial smelled of antiseptic wash and lukewarm coffee. Chloe lay curled beneath a thin fleece blanket, an IV drip taped to the back of her left hand. The harsh mechanical hiss of the nebulizer hummed rhythmically beside the bed, pumping albuterol vapor into her lungs.
Dr. Jonathan Vance, a veteran pediatric pulmonologist with weary silver eyes, stepped into the room holding Chloe’s chart. He glanced at Laura, who hadn’t left the bedside vinyl armchair for eight straight hours.
"Her oxygen saturation dropped to seventy-eight percent before the paramedics administered the epinephrine," Dr. Vance said quietly, closing the folder. "Another two minutes without that bronchodilator, Laura, and we’d be having an entirely different conversation right now. Severe hypoxic brain damage, or worse."
Laura felt a cold knot tighten in the pit of her stomach. "She will recover fully, won't she?"
"Her airways are heavily inflamed, but children are resilient," the doctor assured her gently. "We’re keeping her under observation for forty-eight hours. What concerns me more, Laura, is the police report. Withholding life-saving medication is a felony in this state. Child Protective Services has already been notified, and they will be conducting a formal evaluation."
Laura nodded, her jaw locked tight. "Let them investigate. I want everything documented. Every text message, every medical refusal, every incident."
Late that night, Chloe stirred. Her eyelids fluttered open, heavy with exhaustion. When she saw Laura leaning over her, the little girl reached up with trembling fingers to touch her mother’s cheek.
"Mommy..." Chloe whispered, her voice raspy beneath the mask. "Grandma said if I cried, God wouldn't love me."

Laura felt her heart shatter into a thousand jagged pieces. She leaned down, kissing Chloe’s forehead, shielding the child with her body against the cold world outside. "Grandma was wrong, my angel. God gave you tears so you could let the pain out, and He gave you a voice so the world could hear you fight. You never, ever have to stay quiet again."
