Chapter 4: The Mansion's Shadows**

Discharged from the hospital two days later, Laura left Chloe in the safe care of her sister Sarah at a quiet farmhouse outside town. Accompanied by Marcus to ensure the restraining order was enforced, Laura returned to the sprawling Sterling estate on Crestwood Lane to retrieve their personal belongings.
The limestone mansion felt emptier than a tomb. The air was thick with the scent of lavender furniture polish and stale cedarwood. Every oil painting on the walls depicting generations of stoic, unsmiling Sterling patriarchs seemed to judge Laura as she walked up the grand spiral staircase.
In the master bedroom, Laura packed two large duffel bags with Chloe’s clothes, favorite storybooks, and school supplies. As she reached into the top of Chloe’s closet to grab a winter coat, her hand brushed against a heavy steel lockbox hidden behind an old hatbox.
"What is that?" Marcus asked from the doorway, keeping a watchful eye on the hallway.
"It belonged to Julian," Laura said, her breath hitching. Julian had been Evelyn’s only son—Laura’s late husband, who passed away in a tragic single-vehicle car accident three years earlier. "He told me he kept his private journals in here, but he always kept the key on his personal keyring."
"Do you know the combination?"
Laura stared at the four-digit tumbler. She tried Julian’s birthday—nothing. She tried Chloe’s birthday. The lock clicked with a heavy metallic snap.
Inside the box lay no jewelry or cash. Instead, there were three thick, leather-bound diaries and a USB thumb drive taped to a manila envelope labeled: *FOR CHLOE, WHEN SHE IS READY TO KNOW THE TRUTH.*
Laura opened the first journal. Julian’s frantic handwriting covered the yellowed pages:
*“Mother’s control isn't love—it’s an infection. She convinced the board to alter my father’s medical records before his death. She threatens to cut off Chloe’s pediatric trust if I ever expose what she did to the family foundation. If anything happens to me, Laura must take Chloe and run.”*
May you like
Laura’s knees gave out. Julian hadn’t died in a simple reckless driving accident while intoxicated, as Evelyn had claimed to the press. Julian had been running for his life.
