Chapter 6: Cornered Wolves**

The silence lasted five agonizing seconds before Evelyn spoke again, her voice stripped of its aristocratic polish, replaced by raw venom.

"You have no idea what you’re tampering with, girl," Evelyn hissed. "Julian was weak. He lacked the stomach to maintain an empire. If you think a few paranoid scribbles in a notebook can dismantle forty years of Sterling legacy, you are far more foolish than I anticipated."

"These aren't scribbles, Evelyn. These are federal banking transaction IDs, offshore account ledgers, and Julian's signed affidavit," Laura countered, standing tall in the small kitchen. "You didn't just break my family; you stole breath from thousands of children who couldn't fight back. But I can."

Laura ended the call and blocked the number immediately.

Ten minutes later, Marcus arrived at the farmhouse in his personal truck. Laura showed him the digital files. As Marcus scrolled through the forensic financial data, his seasoned officer’s eyes widened with each passing document.

"This goes way beyond the county sheriff’s jurisdiction," Marcus said, looking up from the glowing screen. "This is federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and grand larceny. The Sterling Foundation is audited by the state department of revenue, which means Evelyn likely had insiders tipping her off for years."

"Can we go to the FBI?" Sarah asked anxiously.

"Not just yet," Marcus replied, his tactical instincts taking over. "If Evelyn knows Laura has these files, she will move rapidly to destroy digital backups and liquidate those offshore accounts. She might even attempt to flee the country before an indictment can be unsealed. We need to take this straight to the Special Prosecutions Unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the morning."

"Until then?" Laura asked, glancing at Chloe, who had fallen asleep on the sofa, clutching her teddy bear.

Marcus patted the service holster concealed beneath his jacket. "Until then, I'm staying right on this porch. Nobody touches this house tonight."
