Chapter 5: The Web of Deceit**

Back at the farmhouse, Laura plugged the USB drive into her laptop while Chloe colored quietly at the kitchen table with her aunt. The drive contained hundreds of digitized bank statements, encrypted email exchanges, and board meeting minutes spanning over a decade.
Evelyn wasn't just a controlling matriarch; she was the sole trustee of the Sterling Charitable Medical Foundation—a multi-million-dollar non-profit intended to provide free pediatric asthma medication and medical care to low-income families across the state. But the spreadsheets told a horrifying story of systemic embezzlement. Millions of dollars earmarked for subsidized pharmaceuticals had been systematically siphoned into offshore holding accounts in the Cayman Islands to sustain Evelyn’s lavish lifestyle and political donations.
"She built her empire on the backs of sick children," Laura whispered, her voice trembling with disgust. "She withheld medicine from the poor to buy antique furniture and private jet memberships... and when Julian found out, he tried to report her to the state attorney general."
Sarah walked over, resting a comforting hand on Laura’s shoulder. "Julian was terrified of her, Laura. We all thought he was struggling with depression after his father died, but he was carrying this impossible burden alone."
Suddenly, Laura’s phone buzzed violently against the wooden tabletop. The caller ID showed an unknown, unlisted number.
Laura hesitated, took a steadying breath, and hit speakerphone.
"I see you visited the house today, Laura," Evelyn’s chilled, aristocratic voice resonated through the speaker.
"You are violating the court order, Evelyn," Laura said, her tone razor-sharp. "Hang up before I report this directly to Officer Miller."
"Report whatever you wish, dear," Evelyn sneered softly. "A piece of paper cannot undo bloodlines. Chloe belongs to the Sterling name. Return her to my custody by tomorrow noon, or my legal team will file a motion declaring you mentally unstable and financially destitute. You won't just lose custody—you'll spend the next ten years behind bars for filing false reports."
"I found Julian's lockbox, Evelyn," Laura said with deadly calm.
