Chapter 9: The Signal**

Julian’s face darkened with sudden rage. "Stop playing games! Shoot them and take the boy!"

Before the two thugs could raise their weapons, a deafening siren echoed outside the warehouse, followed by the roar of dozens of heavy diesel engines. Powerful halogen spotlights suddenly shattered the gloom, blasting through the warehouse windows and turning the darkness into blinding white noon.

*"THIS IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION AND SEATTLE POLICE DEPARTMENT. DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!"* a booming voice amplified by a megaphone tore through the rafters.

Julian froze, his gun trembling in his hand. "How?! You didn't make a phone call! You were with the boy the entire time!"

Elena stood up, tall and unyielding in the floodlights. "I didn't call them, Julian. Clara didn't call them today either."

Elena pointed toward the heavy leather-bound ledger lying at Leo's feet. Beneath its false spine, a tiny, blinking green LED light pulsed rhythmically.

"Clara mailed a timed emergency beacon to the Department of Justice two days ago," Elena revealed, her voice echoing with utter authority. "It was programmed to activate a military-grade GPS signal the moment the clasp was unlocked. When Leo opened it for me by the docks... it sent your exact coordinates to every federal agent within fifty miles."

"You b***h!" Julian roared, raising his pistol toward Clara in a blind panic.

"NO!"

Elena launched herself forward without a second thought.
