Chapter 5: The Ledger of Sins**

Elena’s aggressive driving shook the trailing SUV off their tail in the maze of Seattle’s harbor tunnels. She parked the car behind an abandoned grain silo two streets away from St. Jude’s Wharf, killing the engine.
The afternoon sky was turning a bruised shade of purple, heavy rain clouds rolling in from the Pacific.
"Leo, tell me about this ledger," Elena asked gently as she adjusted his oversized collar.
The boy reached under his loose shirt. Tied securely around his small torso with thick twine was a flat, water-resistant pouch. "Mom tied this on me before we left this morning. She said this is my shield. She said as long as I have this, you will know the truth."
Elena untied the twine with trembling hands. Inside was a leather-bound journal filled with dates, offshore bank accounts, signatures, and transfer slips spanning a decade. Tucked between the pages were photographs of Julian Cross meeting with city inspectors and arson investigators—undeniable proof of murder, bribery, and systemic fraud.
Beside the numbers, in Clara’s familiar cursive, was a personal diary entry dated five years ago:
> *'I let Elena believe I was dead because I was weak. I couldn't bear for her to see my scarred face, nor did I want Julian's crosshairs aimed at her. If she thought I was gone, she would be safe. But raising Leo in the dark has shown me that love isn't hiding; love is fighting to give your child the daylight.'*
Tears blurred Elena's vision. All these years, she had hated herself, believing her coldness had driven Clara to stay alone at the manor on that fatal night. Clara hadn't perished in silence; she had suffered in hiding to keep Elena alive.

"Elena?" Leo whispered, tugging her sleeve. "It’s almost sundown. Mommy is waiting."
