Chapter 13: Building a Home**

Six months after the trial, life took on a quiet, healing rhythm at Elena’s coastal home overlooking Puget Sound.

The grand, sterile mansion that Elena had once kept like a museum of solitary grief was now alive with color and warmth. Toys lay scattered across the plush living room rugs; children’s drawings hung from the stainless steel refrigerator with magnetic clips.

Elena stood in the kitchen, carefully packing a lunchbox with peanut butter sandwiches and freshly sliced apples.

"Leo! Your school bus will be here in fifteen minutes!" she called out.

Pounding footsteps echoed down the grand spiral staircase. Leo slid across the polished hardwood floor in his socks, holding up a wooden model airplane he had assembled the night before.

"Look, Auntie Ellie! The wings are dry!" he cheered.

Elena knelt down, smiling as she inspected the craft. "It’s beautiful, Leo. Your grandfather was an engineer—he would have been so proud of those clean lines."

She gently smoothed down his unruly hair, her thumb brushing over his cheek. He had gained healthy weight; his skin was glowing with vitality, and the haunted shadow that once lived in his eyes had been replaced by the bright curiosity of a happy child.

"Are you ready for your first piano lesson today?" Elena asked, adjusting his backpack straps.

Leo nodded eagerly. "Can we learn the song Mommy used to hum?"

May you like

"We will learn every single note," Elena promised softly, kissing the crown of his head.
